In 2006, the University established the State Key Laboratory in Oncology in South China at The Chinese University of Hong Kong which is a scientific research centre at national level focusing especially on cancers of high prevalence in Asia. Its establishment was approved by the Central Government’s Ministry of Science and Technology of China. The University has established a number of multilateral, and cross-disciplinary research centres with its partners such as the CUHK–Zhejiang University Joint Laboratory on Natural Products and Toxicology Research, The Joint Scoliosis Research Centre of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Nanjing University, the William Mong Eye Centre of Tsinghua University & CUHK, the Shanghai–Hong Kong Development Institute, the Joint Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering, the Epithelial Cell Biology Research Centre, the Joint Laboratory for Regenerative Medicine, The Chinese University of Hong Kong–Ji Nan University, the Joint Laboratory for Plant Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, the Joint Centre for Intelligence Engineering, the Joint Centre for Advanced Photonics Research of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Zhejiang University, the Joint Laboratory for Geoinformation Science, the Hong Kong Base of Research, Development and Training of the National Remote Sensing Centre of China, and the CUHK/Tsinghua University Joint R&D Program on Chinese Enterprise Internet Operations. These centres play a very important role in promoting high-standard scientific research and enhancing collaborative relationship among the partners. The University, together with the ChineseAcademy of Sciences, has also solicited support from business enterprises to set up the Shanghai–Hong Kong–Anson Research Foundation for CAS and CUHK in Molecular Biosciences. With support from various foundations, the University organizes conferences related to academic development and social changes which are attended by renowned scholars the world over.
