26 Part 1 • General Information Part 1 Wu Yee Sun College With the donation of HK$170 million from Wu Yee Sun Charitable Foundation Ltd., the Wu Yee Sun College has been established, which will accommodate 600 residential students and in addition up to another 600 commuters. The four new Colleges share the University’s educational ideals. They have a common mission to foster an intimate and collegial community where students learn, share and grow together intellectually; to maintain a congenial environment for students to enjoy their college life; to provide pastoral care and whole-person education, including general education; and to broaden and internationalize students’ perspectives through formal and informal education programmes. Morningside College has a special vision to cultivate among its students a commitment to serve the community of Hong Kong, China and the world. The S.H. Ho College seeks to nurture a commitment to personal responsibility and integrity, enabling its students to make useful contributions to society after graduation and to lead productive lives. C.W. Chu College will endeavour to cultivate among students a commitment to personal responsibility and integrity, as well as the spirit of self-help and helping others, advocated and personally practised by the late Dr. C.W. Chu, which will lay the foundation for making contributions to society, nurturing of talents for the nation and enriching students’ lives. Wu Yee Sun College wishes to cultivate among students a commitment to personal and social responsibility as well as integrity which will lay the foundation for making contributins to society and an enriching life in the future. Two scholars of international renown — Nobel Laureate in economic sciences, Prof. Sir James Mirrlees, and world authority on plant molecular biology and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Prof. Samuel Sun Sai-ming, were appointed Masters-Designate of Monringside College and S.H. Ho College respectively in August 2006. A Planning Committee for each College has also been appointed and planning work has already begun. It is anticipated that the new Colleges can be in full operation before 2012. n
