CUHK Newsletter : Exhibition at the Art Gallery: The Art of Su Liupeng & Su Renshan The exhibition of ‘The Art of Su Liupeng & Su Renshan', jointly presented by the Guangzhou Art Gallery and The Chinese University Art Gallery, will be mounted in the Westwing Galleries of the Art Gallery from 24th March to 20th May, 1990. There will be 100 pieces of calligraphy and paintings, 60 of which are from the Guangzhou Art Gallery and 40 from the CU Art Gallery. After they have been displayed on the CU campus, all the exhibits will be sent to Guangzhou for display at the Guangzhou Art Gallery. Known as the ‘Two Sus', Su Liupeng and Su Renshan were two Guangdong painters active in the first half of the nineteenth century. Liupeng was well known for his figure paintings, which depict a great variety of subjects, including legendary scenes, literary gatherings and the daily lives of the common people. His style varies from the most refined to the extremely free. He has a special reputation for painting the blind people, a subject usually not covered by the literati painters. Su Renshan was famous for painting immortals and Buddist figures, as well as landscapes. Himself an eccentric figure, Renshan's style is both unique and expressive. He used lines inspired by the woodblock prints, achieving an individual expression in form and composition. The preview of the exhibition will be held at 4.30 p.m. on 23rd March (Friday) at the Art Gallery. Mr. Xie Wenyong, adviser of the Guangzhou Art Gallery, and Mr. Wong Chung Yin, adviser of the CU Art Gallery, will officiate at the opening ceremony. All are welcome.
