CUHK Newsletter 1990 Uni ted College Annual Workshop on ’ Hong Kong i n the 90s ’ The 1990 United College Annual Workshop on ‘Hong Kong in the 90s' was held on Thursday, 1st February. The aim of the workshop was to examine the major changes that had taken place over the last decade and that would continue to influence Hong Kong in the next ten years. Four major areas of interest, namely, political reforms, human rights issues, economic systems and the minds of Hong Kong people in the 1990s were highlighted. Views on how Hong Kong should stand and react in the 1990s were exchanged. The workshop comprised panel and small group discussions, a plenary session and plenary discussions. Dr. Joseph Cheng of the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong; Dr. P. W. Liu of the Department of Economics; Mr. T. L. Tsim of The Chinese University Press and Mr. Andrew Wong of the Department of Government and Public Administration were invited to be panellists. Over 150 students and staff members attended the workshop. Budding Scholar Exchange Programme, Uni ted College A group of student scholars from Tunghai University, Taiwan visited United College from 9th to 13th February under the ‘Budding Scholar ExchangeProgramme '• The Budding Scholar Exchange Programme is financially supported by the United College Endowment Fund and is organized by the United College Dean of Students' Office and the United College Students' Union. Its objectives are 1. To establish student-based academic exchange programmes with other universities and institutions in Asia; 2. To cultivate amongst the students a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, artistic and scientific issues in other regions in Asia; 3. To enable students to understand the affairs and problems in Hong Kong better through regional comparisons so that they can render better services to Hong Kong; and 4. To cultivate the intellectual faculties of the student participants. The Tunghai visitors were the first batch of exchange scholars and they presented a seminar on ‘The Chinese Problems after the June 4 Incident at Tian'anmen Square’ on 12th February. The United College Budding Scholar Teamwill pay a reciprocal visit to Tunghai University in December this year and will conduct a comparative research on the environmental management issues in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Exchange arrangements have also been established with the National University of Singapore and details will be announced later. More Funds for Electronic Hands The Children Upper Limb Prosthetic Clinic run by the University's Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology recently received another donation for the purchase of electronic hands and spare parts for children with upper limb deficiencies. The donors this time were the Royal Hong Kong Junior Police Officers' Association (JPOA) and the Outstanding Young Persons' Association (TOYPA). They jointly organized a charitable soccer match last December to raise funds for the clinic. At a brief ceremony held on 19th February, the past chairman of TOYPA, Miss Carlye Tsui, and the past chairman of JPOA, Mr. Tsui Wai Chun, presented a cheque for $178,180 to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ambrose King. The last time the clinic received a donation to provide special electronic hand prostheses for needy children was in December 1989, from the Yung Foundation. 6
