CUHK Newsletter following courses have been tentatively scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 2.30 to 4.15 p.m. at the Fong Shu Chuen Building: (1) Beginner's courses in Mandarin and Cantonese for foreigners; (2) Beginner's course in Mandarin for non-Mandarin speakers of Chinese origin; and (3) Beginner's course in Cantonese for non-Cantonese speakers of Chinese origin. Enrolment will be limited and applications will be accepted on a first-come-first-served basis. Basic tuition fee for each course is HK$2,600. The University will subsidize 40 per cent of the tuition fee for all full-time academic and administrative staff as well as their spouses who are expected to be with the University for at least two years, and who are not receiving a language study subsidy from any other source. Salary Revisions Following a structural revision of the civil service Master Pay Scale effective from 1st October 1989 and a further 15 per cent pay rise for all civil servants from 1st April 1990, the University Council recently approved a corresponding revision of salaries for staff employed under Terms of Service (B) and (C). New salaries have been paid in the July 1990 payroll together with backpay for the months up to June 1990. New salaries for staffemployed under Terms of Service (A) will be paid as soon as the Government has approved their new salary scales. Such approval is expected in August 1990 and the University Bursary hopes to pay the new salaries together with backpay in the August payroll. There will be a further revision in salaries for certain grades of senior staff in October 1990. Reimbursement of Course Fees to Terms of Service (B) and (C) Staff The University will soon consider requests for reimbursement of fees to staff members on Terms of Service (B) and (C) who will attend training courses which start between September and December 1990. All applications together with written recommendations by unit heads should be forwarded to Mr. S.S. Tam, Secretary, Administrative Affairs Committee, c/o Personnel Section, University Administration Building (Ext. 2269) by Saturday, 8th September 1990. Laying of Underground Cables The Buildings Office announce that underground cables are being laid on the campus for the University's new telecommunications system and electricity distribution system. University staff are requested to put up with the inconvenience caused by extensive trenching work on roads and pavements. Change of Telephone Numbers To meet the demand for telephones from new customers, Hong Kong Telephone needs to rearrange telephone numbers in the Sha Tin district and the University will be affected. A ll direct line numbers not starting with 6035 or 6036 will be changed in about six months' time. The University's main exchange number will also be changed at a later date. About three months before the change, subscribers will be informed of the exact date of change and their new numbers. Immediately after the number change, anyone dialling the old number will be advised of the new one. This service will be provided free by Hong Kong Telephone for at least one month. 3
