No.16 Mar. 1991 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENT Professorial Appointment Professor of Pharmacology Prof. Robert L. Jones Prof. Robert L. Jones has been appointed as professor of pharmacology from 21st January 1991. Prof. Jones obtained his B.Pharm. and PhD. degrees from the University of London in UK in 1967 and 1970 respectively. Upon graduation, he joined the University of Edinburgh as lecturer and was promoted to readership in 1977. Prof. Jones is a member of various academic bodies such as the Society for Drug Research; the British Information Research Association; and the British Pharmacological Society, of which he was an editorial board member from 1976 to 1982, and from which he received the Sandoz Prize in 1974. Prof. Jones' major research interest is the pharmacology of eicosanoids (oxygen-containing metabolites of arachidonic and related acids), in particular the characterization of prostanoid receptors. Prof. Jones is married, with two children. Professorial Inaugural Lecture Prof. Kenneth Young, professor of physics, will deliver his inaugural lecture on ‘Disorder and Dissipation in Physics' in Lecture Theatre 6 , Lady Shaw Building on 22nd March at 5.00 p.m. All are welcome. University Library News * The University Library System, including theUniversity Library, college libraries and L i Ping Medical Library, will be closed on 1st April (Easter Monday) and 5th April (Ching Ming Festival). The opening hours of these libraries will also be slightly different than usual from 29th to 31st March. For details please read notices put up at the respective libraries. * * * * The University Library will stage an exhibition of 'Academic Publications: Faculty of Business Administration' from 9th to 22nd April to introduce the works of the members of the faculty to the University community. A ll are welcome. * * * * The University Library System and the Consulate General of France will jointly organize an exhibition of posters on ‘Europe in the 12th Century' from 22nd March to 7th Ap r il to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the birth of Saint Bernard of Chairvaux (1090-1153). Saint Bernard, founder of the Cistercian Abbey at Chairvaux in France, had profound influence on church and civil affairs in Europe in the 12th century. The exhibition will be staged at the University Library. All are welcome. The University Health Service will offer a five-session first aid course in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for interested students and staff. Beginning on 3rd April for five consecutive Wednesdays, the course intends to explain the basic theory and practice of cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as a life-saving measure in emergencies. Certificates of attendance will be issued on request upon completion of the course. Application forms are available at the Health Centre. Please enrol before 22nd March. Blood Donation Week The University has organized a blood donation week on campus from 18th to 22nd March.
