No.29 April 1992 CUHK Newsletter Fu t u re Users of the Universi ty Library Extension The extension to the University Library currently under construction is expected to be completed by the end of 1992. The Ad Hoc Working Group on Space Allocation has deliberated on the use of the new building and the Administrative And Planning Committee has initially approved the following arrangements: Floor Use G/F, 1/F Library extension 2/F To house an independent learning centre of the English Language Teaching Unit and additional library offices. 3/F, 4/F Temporary classrooms 5/F, 6/F Not yet decided 7/F To house the Hong Kong Institute of Asia Pacific Studies 8/F To house the Office of Academic Links, the Proposed Hong Kong - American Educational Exchange Centre, and part of the Universities Service Centre 9/F To house the Universities Service Centre. Further adjustments in the above allocation arrangements might be made in the event of new developments and when the need arises. Si u- l i en Ling Wong Vi s i t i ng Fellow 1991-92 Prof. Shi-Kuo Chang, a renowned computer scientist and novelist, visited Chung Chi College as its Siu-lien L i ng Wong Visiting Fellow from 8th to 15th March. During his stay at the University, Prof. Chang conducted a series of lectures covering a wide range of topics, ranging from 'Chinese Information Processing', ‘Visual Languages', ‘MUSE: Micro-University for Sciences and Engineering', 'The Impact of Computers and Communication Technology on Education', to ‘The World of Science Fiction'. An electrical engineering graduate of the National Taiwan University, Prof. Chang received his MS and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked as a research scientist at I BM Watson Research Center from 1969 to 1975 and has thereafter taught at various leading universities in the States: the University of Illinois, Illinois Institute of Technology, and the University of Pittsburgh. Prof. Chang is currently professor and director of Pittsburgh's Center for Parallel, Distributed and Intelligent Systems. An acclaimed writer of science fiction in Taiwan, Prof. Chang has published some 20 novels, and various collections of short stories and essays. S i r Run Run Shaw Dist inguished Vi s i t i ng Scholar 1991-92 Prof. Shinichi Ichimura, vice-president of Osaka International University, gave an open lecture on The Pattern of East Asian Development and the Role of Japan' on 27th March as Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar of Shaw College. Prof. Ichimura obtained his Ph.D. degree from theMassachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953 and was awarded a Doctor of Economics (under the old system) by Osaka University in 1963. He has taught and worked at many leading universities and research institutions within and without Japan, and has served on a number of advisory committees in the Japanese government. Since 1972, he has been a member of the advisory committee for development planning for the Director General of the United Nations. Prof. Ichimura is concurrently professor of economics of Osaka International University, and director of its Institute of International Relations. Y a l e Historian Visits Uni ted College Prof. Jonathan D. Spence, George B. Adams Professor of History at Yale University, visited United College from 14th to 19th March as the college's Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Prof. Spence is a renowned historian who specializes in the history of modern China. Many of his books on Chinese history and dignitaries of the late Ming and Qing dynasties are bestsellers in many countries. During his stay at the University, Prof. Spence gave two lectures on the theme of ‘China in the West'. The first lecture, entitled 'Coming to Terms with the New', took place on 16th March, and the second lecture, 'System Building and Imagination', on 18th March. The lecture theatre at United College was fully packed by well over 200 students, staff and interested members of the public on both occasions. 3
