No.29 April 1992 CUHK Newsletter ANNOUNCEMENTS Professorial Appointment Dr. Michael H. Bond has been appointed professor of psychology from 1st March 1992. Prof. Bond graduated with a BA degree from the University of Toronto, Canada in 1966. He furthered his studies in the United States at Stanford University and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1970. After graduation, Prof. Bond worked at Michigan State University as research associate for a year before moving to Kwansei Gakuin University, Japan to take up the post of visiting assistant professor of the Department of Sociology. He joined The Chinese University as lecturer in psychology in 1974 and was promoted to senior lecturer in 1980 and reader in 1987. Prof. Bond is married, with two children. Professorial Inaugural Lecture Prof. Ferdinand A. Gul, professor of accountancy, will deliver his inaugural lecture entitled ‘Accounting Information Systems, Individual Differences and Human Behaviour' on Friday, 24th April at 5:00 p.m. in Lecture Theatre 6’ Lady Shaw Building. All are welcome. Wei Lun Lectures Prof. James Michael Holquist, professor of comparative literature and chairman of the Department of Soviet and East European Studies, Yale University, and Prof. Peter Townsend, professor of Experimental Physics of the University of Sussex, have been invited to visit this university as Wei Lun Visiting Professors and give three public lectures. The two lectures to be delivered by Prof. Holquist, entitled 'Nationalism and (Auto) Biography: Reflections on a Russian Doll’ and ‘From Cultural Studies to Cultural Criticism: Remembering Censorship', will take place on 15th and 23rd April respectively at 4:30 p.m. at Lecture Theatre 6, Lady Shaw Building. Prof. Townsend will give a lecture on The Need for Imperfections' on 14th May at 4.30 p.m. at Lecture Theatre 1, Lady Shaw Building. All are welcome. University Library News Online Tutorial for New Users of CD-ROM Search The Reference Department of the University Library has now made available online tutorial for new users of CD-ROM Search. Previously users of CD-ROM Search were introduced to the system through briefings by the staff of the Reference Department or by reading search guides themselves. The newly offered online tutorial enables users to learn the search technique at their own pace through a computer interactive system, which simulates various steps of CD-ROM Search. Currently, online tutorial is available for CD-ROM Search of the following titles: Sociofile, PsycLit and the DIALOG disks (Compendex, ERIC and the Medline). Please ask for more information at the Reference Counter of the University Library. ACU Directories Revised editions of two reference books compiled by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) are now available at the University Library. The two directories, respectively entitled Awards for University Teachers and Research Workers 1992-94 (formerly Awards for Commonwealth University Academic Staff), and Awards for University Administrators and Librarians 1992-94 (formerly Grants for Study Visits by University Administrators and Librarians), provide useful information on financial support for research, study visits, short-term teaching as well as professional development programmes for administrators and librarians at Commonwealth institutions. Mandarin and Cantonese Courses for Staff & Spouses The New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre will again offer Mandarin and Cantonese courses to the University's academic and administrative staff and their spouses from 2nd June to 4th August 1992. The following courses have been tentatively scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 2.30 to 4.15 p.m. at the Fong Shu Chuen Building: (1) Beginner's courses in Mandarin and Cantonese for foreigners; (2) Beginner's course in Mandarin for non-Mandarin speakers of Chinese origin; (3) Beginner's course in Cantonese for non-Cantonese speakers of Chinese origin. The size of each class will be limited and participants will be enrolled on a first-come-first-served basis. Basic tuition fee for each course is HK$2,340. The University will subsidize 40 per cent of the tuition fee for all full-time academic and administrative staff as well as their spouses who are expected to be with the University for at least two years, and who are not receiving a language study subsidy from any other source.
