Donation o f $1. 4 Millio n fro m the Crouche r Foundatio n The Trustees o f th e Croucher Foundation recently approved donations totalling HK$ 1,400,000 t o support tw o research projects undertaken b y staff members o f th e University: - HK$ 1,000,000 fo r a three-year research project o n 'Synthesis an d biological evaluation o f potential glycosidase inhibitors an d anti-cancer agents from(-)-quinic acid, by Dr . Tony K . M . Shing o f th e Department of Chemistry. -HK$400,000 for a two-year research project on ‘Biological detoxification of rapeseed meal by edible fungi' b y Dr. Yum-shing Wong o f the Department of Biology. Fourth Worl d Congres s o f HP B Surger y Over a thousand doctors from 7 8 countries took part in the fourth World Congress o f Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery held a t the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 7th to 11th June. That was the first world congress held by the World Association o f HPB Surgery outside Europe, an d th e University's Department of Surgery had been chosen to host the function. The congress provided a forum for medical doctors an d scientists t o exchange their experience i n th e treatment o f diseases o f th e liver, pancreas, an d th e biliary system, an d an opportunity fo r them t o update themselves on the latest developments in treatment techniques, an d th e use of new drugs and surgical equipment. Major themes covered recent advances i n th e treatment o f liver, bile duct an d pancreatic cancers, and ne w technological developments such as endoscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery an d transplantation surgery. Fifteen lectures were delivered and speakers included Prof. Tang Zhao You, a liver cancer expert from China, and Dr. Russell Strong, a liver-transplant specialist from Brisbane, Australia. Some 500 papers were presented, al l o f which were selected b y a n international grading panel o f experts under th e chairmanship o f Dr . Henry Pitt, vice-chairman o f th e Department o f Surgery at the John Hopkins Hospital i n Baltimore, USA. A distinguishing feature o f th e congress was the participation o f over 100 leading medical doctors an d scientists from China. A trade exhibition wa s concurrently held, displaying a wide range o f products related t o hepato-pancreato-biliary surgery. Over 30 manufacturers, suppliers, pharmaceutical companies and publishers took part i n th e exhibition. Semina r o n Sexua lHarassmen t in th eWorkplac e The Gender Research Programme of th e Hong Kong Institute o f Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS) organized a seminar o n 6t h June t o investigate th e problem o f sexual harassment i n th e place o f work. Discussion was held along the themes of th e definition o f 'sexual harassment', case studies o f sexual harassment, sexual harassment o n th e campus, an d ways o f coping with sexual harassment. Mrs. Miriam Lau, Legislative Councillor, was th e guest of honour i n the seminar, and several experts an d academics involved i n relevant studies were invited to deliver speeches. They included Miss Tang Yin-ngor from th e woman committee of th e Hong Kong Confederationo f Trade Union; Miss Leung Lai-ching from th e Coalition Against Sexual Abuse; Miss Elaine Wong, human resources manager o f th e Northwest Airlines; and Dr. Choi Po-king o f the Gender Research Programme i n th e HKIAPS. 3
