Fromleft:Mr.HamShaogong, Prof.Goran Malmqvist, Mrs. JaniceWickeri leading translator of Chinese and Japanese literature, joined the Research Centre for Translation as the first Renditions Fellow in January 1990. Prof. Watson started his career as an academic translator in the 1950s at the University of Columbia, and has produced a series of translations of Chinese historical, philosophical and literary writings. He spent six months at the centre revising his translation of the Shi ji and translating material for a Renditions book, The History of the Qin: Further Translations from the Records of the Historian. H e also o f f e r ed a n eight-session workshop on the translation of classical poetry. In November 1990, Prof. Goran Ma l mq v i s t, Emeritus Professor o f Chinese at the University of Stockholm and Fellow o f the Swedish Academy, arrived to spend six months as Renditions Fellow. Dedicated to bringing classical and contemporary Chinese works t o Western readers, Prof. Malmqvist has put his literary flair to use in the translation of more than one hundred Chinese works into Swedish and English. While he has staying at the University, he finished the Swedish translation of Gao Xingjian's novel Ling shan and continued with his long-term project of translating the Xi you ji into Swedish. He also gave apublic seminar on 'Kang Youwei's Utopian Dream' and a public lecture on The Reconstruction of Ci Prosody', Prof. Cyril Birch, one of the most highly regarded sinologists in the world, joined the centre in October 1991. Prof. Birch, an expert on traditional Chinese literature and a professor of Chinese at the University of California at Berkeley, has published many works on Chinese literature. He worked on the translation of selected Yuan and Ming plays, t o be published by the University of California Press. Prof. Birch gave a talk on The Swallow Letter' and conducted translation workshop classes for M.A. students during his six-month stay at the University. CUEC U Annua l Genera l Meetin g and Sevent h Anniversar y Dinne r Part y The Chinese University o f Hong Kong Employees' Credit Union (CUECU) held its annual general meeting at the Shatin Treasure Restaurant on 21st May 1993, which was followed by a dinner party and a singing contest. Over 300 members and guests attended the function. The meeting approved the various reports given by the CUECU president, treasurer, and the chairpersons of various committees. The staff players defeated their opponents 6:3 i n the nine-game match and their captain, Dr. K. K. Mark, received the Shell Cup from the University Bursar, Mr. David Gilkes. Players on the staff team included Dr. K. K. Mark (Biology), Dr. Michael Tam (Physiology), Dr. Augustine Cheng (Microbiology), Dr. Pak-leong L i m (Clinical Immunology), Mr. Wing-chung Lau (Physical Education) and Mr. Yuk-ho Tam (Clinical Research). 14
