Improvement Programm e Du e fo r Completion in 199 5 The secon d stag e wil l commence right afte r the winte r closing i n lat e 1994 . Thi s tim e th e norther n en d o f th e pavilion (the BFC side) will be expanded. A new storey will be added and the admission turnstiles will be relocated there. With a n extension o f the pavilion building a t both ends and the relocation o f the turnstiles, there will be a much larger lower storey to accommodate more and bigger changing rooms . The whol e programm e wil l no t b e completed unti l lat e 199 5 on account of the complexity of the work involved and the fact that it may be carried out only when the pool is out of season . High Standar d o f Hygien e For members of the University, the pool has bee n on e splendi d plac e t o fen d of f summer heat for over 20 years. It may not be as wel l equippe d a s some newe r pools, bu t its utilit y rat e remains constantl y high , an d that i s no t jus t becaus e i t i s th e onl y swimming facilit y available on campus . Fun g Ka i O n o f th e Buildings Office , who is in charge of wate r supply t o th e pool , 'Wate r qualit y a t th e Chinese University pool has been characteristically high. Whe n th e amoeb a scar e wa s all the rage last year, government inspectors took sample s fro m th e poo l an d foun d nothing harmful . Thi s prove s tha t a hig h standard of cleanliness, one that can stand up to stringent tests, is consistently maintaine d in our pool.' The Filtratio n Proces s The cleanlines s o f th e wate r depend s entirel y o n th e purification plant , whic h i s se t t o wor k a n hou r befor e admission each morning and shut off after the pool is closed in the evening. Purification is a continuous process. First of all a water pump draws pool wate r through suctio n slot s on the side s o f th e poo l int o a larg e filtratio n tank , wher e th e water is filtered through layer s of fine sand. Then th e wate r is treate d wit h chlorin e an d sod a powde r t o eliminat e an y health threatenin g bacteri a o r microbes .
