C U HK NEWSLETTER ANNOUNCEMENTS New Head o f Chung Chi College Prof. Rance P. L. Lee, professor of sociology, has been appointed by the University Council as Head of Chung Chi College for four years from 1st August 1994, succeeding Dr. Philip Shen. Professorial Appointment Prof. Wing-hung Wong has been appointed professor of statistics from 15th June 1994. Prof. Wong received his primary and secondary education in Hong Kong. He then went to the United States and graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with a B.A. degree in mathematics and statistics in 1976. He pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and obtained an M.S. degree in statistics in 1978, and an M.S. degree in computer science and a Ph.D. degree in statistics in 1980. Upon graduation, Prof. Wong joined the University of Chicago as assistant professor of statistics. He was promoted to associate professor in 1985, and chair professor in 1988. He had worked at the University of Chicago for 14 years before joining The Chinese University this summer. Between May and July 1993 he was visiting professor in statistics at CUHK. Prof. Wong is a member of Sigma Xi, the American Statistical Association and the Royal Statistical Society. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (USA). Prof. Wong is married, and has two daughters. Wei L un Lecture Dr. Kary B. Mullis, 1993 Nobel Laureate in chemistry, has been invited to visit this university as Wei Lun Visiting Professor. Dr. Mullis will give a lecture on 'Nucleic Acids: From Long Stringy Molecules to the Polymerase Chain Reaction' on Tuesday, 19th July at 4.00 p.m. in lecture theatre L1, Science Centre. All are welcome. Certificate Courses i n Theology The Theology Division and the School of Continuing Studies will jointly offer one-year elementary, intermediate and advanced certificate courses in theology this October. Elementary Course Course contents will include introduction to theology, introduction to New and Old Testaments, Christian history, Christian education, and pastoral care and counselling. Intermediate Course Course contents will include theology and society, major themes in New and Old Testaments, Chinese church history, Christian ethics, and counselling and growth. Advanced Course Course contents will include New Testament exposition, actualization of Christian faith, God's word in Chinese cultural terms, recent history of Chinese statements of faith. Systems Engineering Department Renamed Effective from the 1994-95 academic year, the Department of Systems Engineering will be renamed as the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management to better reflect its curriculum. Ident i ty Pr oof at BFC Staff Canteen To ensure proper usage of the BFC Staff Canteen, the BFC Canteen Management Sub-committee has authorized the caterer to, from 1st July 1994, inspect the staff identity cards (or other valid identity documents) of diners when necessary. Diners are thus reminded to bring their staff ID cards with them to the canteen and be cooperative when requested to prove their identity. Temporary Closure o f BMSB Snack Bar The Basic Medical Sciences Building Snack Bar will be closed from 18th to 25th July for annual maintenance. It will re-open for service from 26th July. Places for Resident Tutors at Postgraduate Ha l l Applications are invited from single full-time university staff (preference will be given to Executive Officers) for up to two free hostel places (single rooms) in the Postgraduate Hall Complex for the next academic year (September 1994 to mid-June 1995). Successful applicants are expected to take part in the organization and promotion of hostel activities. Application forms are obtainable from the General Office of the Graduate School (Ground floor, Sui Loong Pao Building). Completed forms should be returned to the office with a stamped self-addressed envelope (4" x 9") before 6th August 1994.
