CUHK NEWSLETTER ANNOUNCEMENTS Professorial Appo i n tment Dr. Lee Shiu-hung has been appointed professor of community medicine from 4th July 1994. Prof. Lee Shiu-hung graduated with MB BS degrees from the University of Hong Kong in 1958, was awarded a diploma in public health by the University of Singapore in 1963, and obtained his diploma in industrial health from the University of London in 1969. He was made Doctor of Medicine by the University of Hong Kong in 1992. Prof. Lee joined the civil service in 1960 and served the Medical and Health Department for 29 years, first as health officer and finally as Acting Director of Medical and Health Services, In 1989 with the establishment of a new Department of Health, he was appointed Director of Health, and in that capacity he introduced a series of reforms to improve the quality of local medical services. He retired from the civil service in June 1994. Prof. Lee has had extensive experience in preventive medicine, public health, health planning, epidemiology and medical administration, and is a fellow of many medical colleges and associations. He is president of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine and serves on a large number of public committees. He was awarded 'WHO Health for All Medal' in 1988 by the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Western Pacific in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the improvement of public health in Hong Kong. Prof. Lee is married, and has four children. Salary Revisions Following the approval of a close to 10 per cent pay rise by the Hong Kong Government for civil servants from 1st April 1994 , salaries for University staff employed under Terms of Service (B) and (C) will be similarly revised subject to the approval of the University Council. New salaries will be paid in the August payroll together with backpay for the months up to July 1994. New salaries for staff employed under Terms of Service (A) will be paid as soon as the government has approved their new salary scales. The University Bursary hopes to obtain such approval in time to pay the new salaries together with backpay in the September payroll. Changes i n Personal Da ta Shou ld Be Registered w i t h t he Personnel Office To facilitate the maintenance of up-to-date personnel records at the University, staff members are requested to notify the Personnel Office in writing at the earliest possible opportunity if they have moved house, changed their marital status or telephone number, or acquired additional qualifications. Prompt notification of such changes is essential for ensuring accuracy in the University's official records and publications such as the University Calendar, Bulletin and Newsletter. Please note that the Publication Office, which is responsible for compiling official publications, does not keep or maintain such personnel records. Married appointees are also reminded to notify the Personnel Office on a prescribed form if they would like to change their options in respect of benefits such as education allowance, housing, passages, or if there have been changes in their spouses' entitlement to such benefits provided by the latters' employers. Travelin g Allowances Ad j us t ed Upwa r ds Monthly travelling allowances payable to Terms of Service (B) and (C) staff have been revised with effect from 1st August 1994 as follows: District of Residence New Rates (HK$) Hong Kong Island 94 Kowloon, Tsuen Wan, 78 Tuen Mun, Yuen Long Sheung Shui, Fanling 54 Tai Po 32 Sha Tin 24 New Staf f Bus Sub c r i p t i on Charges Following the renewal of the bus service agreement with Keung Kee Tours & Transportation Co. Ltd., staff bus subscription charges have been revised with effect from 1st August 1994 as follows: Routes Revised Rates HK Island $375/month NT & Kowloon $230/month The new fares for casual riders are $12 per trip for HK routes and $9 for NT & Kowloon routes. Re imbu r sement o f Course Fees The University will soon consider requests for reimbursement of fees to staff members employed under Terms of Service (B) and (C) who will attend training courses which start between September and December 1994.
