C U H K NEWSLETTER New Publications of HKIAPS The Hong Kong Institute of Asia- Pacific Studies recently published two occasional papers: • Urban Research in Asia: Problems, Priorities and Prospects, by Prof. Yeung Yue-man. This paper reviews salient regional urban trends in Asia since 1970. Urban research problems over time are highlighted and research priorities addressed, w i t h a brief survey of research institutions. It concludes w i th a tentative urban research agenda for the 1990s. • China's Regional Economic Development and Its Policy Implications, by Dr. Hsueh Tien-tung. The paper tries to give an overall analysis of the historical evolution of China's regional economic development and its policy implications. It discusses the comparative advantages of the East, Middle, and West in China and identifies five growth cores and four possible regional development patterns: a resource-oriented type, a p r o c e s s i n g - o r i e n t ed t ype, a resource-processing mixed type, and a specific type for Hainan and Tibet. New Book of The University Press • The Chinese Sources for the History of Singapore Before 1912 ( i n Chinese), by Jao Tsung-i, 382 pages, paperback, HK$280. The book w i ll be sold at a 20 per cent discount to staff members at the University Bookshop, John Fulton Centre. Dinner in Honour of Dr. Philip Shen and Prof. Rance P.L.Lee A dinner reception in honour of Dr. Philip Shen, the outgoing head of Chung Chi College, and Prof. Rance P. L. Lee, the head-designate, hosted by the college's Board of Trustees, was held on 6th July 1994 at the Victoriana Room of the Hotel Furama. Dr. Philip Shen has been with Chung Chi College for 32 years. He has taught programmes in philosophy, religion and theology, helped develop general education programmes in the college and the University, encouraged student participation in various political and social activities, and p l ayed an impo r t ant role i n the development of Asian theological thinking. Prof. Rance P. L. Lee, new head of college from 1st August, is also a senior college member. After graduation from Chung Chi in 1965, he furthered his studies at the University of Pittsburgh, USA. Three years later he returned to Hong Kong with his doctorate and joined the University's Department of Sociology. Prof. Lee was appointed professor of sociology in 1984 and is now Dean of Social Science. As a token of appreciation of Dr. Shen's contribution to the college, in particular as college head, the Chung Chi Board of Trustees presented to Dr. Shen a piece of Chinese calligraphy, which is a couplet authored by Mr. Leung Kui Hung and written by Mr. Yung Ho Yin, both members of Chung Chi College. Guests for the evening included Prof. Ambrose King, acting vice- chancellor, various University officers, and the college's fellows and trustees. Postgraduate Programme in Industrial-Organizational Psychology Yet to be Approved I n the last issue o f the CUHK Newsletter (No.56, p.5) an M.Phil, p r o g r amme in i n d u s t r i a l- o r g a n i z a t i o n al p s y c h o l o gy was wrongly listed as one of the new academic programmes approved by the Un i ve r s i ty Senate in its last meeting. The original programme proposal has i n fact been w i t h d r a wn f or necessary revision by the graduate division concerned. A revised proposal is being considered by the Graduate Council and will be submitted to the University Senate for approval in due course. NO.57 AUGUST 1994 3
