CUHK NEWSLETTER Staff Development Grants/Programmes 1993-94 The University administers a variety of fellowships and scholarships for teaching and administrative staff to conduct research, pursue further studies in local or overseas institutions, or to broaden their experience through participation in conferences and publication projects. Here is a summary of the major grants for staff development in 1993-94 and the recipients of such grants: Asian Productivity Organization Awardee: Dr. K im Seung-chul, lecturer in decision sciences and managerial economics Programme: To attend a training course in production management information systems in Japan. Period: 9th August - 16th September 1993 ASA I HL Shaw Foundation Fellowship Scheme Awardee: Prof. Ferdinand A. Gul, professor of accountancy Programme: To give lecture and conduct research at the International Islamic University, Malaysia. Period: 24th January - 7th February 1994 CUHK-Robinson College Exchange Scheme Awardee: Dr. Lui Tai-lok, lecturer in sociology Programme: To conduct research at Cambridge University, UK. Period: 21s t February - 1st May 1994 Di p l oma Course i n Management for Executive Development (MED) Scholarships Awardees: Mr. Cheng Che-hoo, Senior Computer Officer II, Computer Services Centre; Mr. Mak Nin-fung, Executive Assistant II, PDP in Business Administration Programme: To attend the MED diploma course. Period: 2nd September 1993 - July 1994 Freemasons' Fund for East Asian Studies Awardee: Dr. Lee Hun-tak, Thomas, lecturer in English Programme: To launch a project on 'A Hong Kong Child Language Computer Database'. Period: September 1993 - August 1995 Awardee: Dr. Ho Puay-peng, lecturer in architecture Programme: To launch a project on 'Building for the Goddess: The Architecture of Tianhou Temple in Hong Kong', Period: September 1993 - April 1994 Awardee: Mr. Li I-kang, Andrew, and Dr. Ho Puay-peng, lecturers in architecture Programme: To launch a project on 'Anthology of Writings on Chinese Architecture'. Period: October 1993 - September 1994 Harvard-Yenching V i s i t i ng Scholars Programme Awardee: Dr. Chan Man, Joseph, senior lecturer in journalism and communication Programme: To compile a book on political transition and journalists in Hong Kong and to complete two to three papers on the development of television broadcasting in Southern China at Harvard University, USA. Period: 1st September 1993 - 15th August 1994 Awardee: Dr. Wong Wang-chi, lecturer in translation Programme: To conduct research on The Chinese League of Left-wing Writers: its foreign relations and international role' at Harvard University, USA. Period: 23rd August 1993 - 6th August 1994 C.Y. Kwan Endowment Fund for Staff Development Awardee: Mr. Lui Chun-kwong, Victor, lecturer in fine arts Programme: To pursue postgraduate studies in fine arts in the UK. Period: 1st October 1993 - 17th September 1994 Awardee: Dr. Yip Choy-yin, Virginia, lecturer in English Programme: To conduct research studies in Los Angeles, USA. Period: 2nd January - 28th June 1994 Awardee: Mr. Yau Yau-kwan, Joseph, Instructor I, Department of English Programme: To pursue part-time studies for a doctoral degree at the University of Nottingham, UK. Period: 16th May - 11th June 1994 Lee Hysan Foundation Endowment Fund for Staff Development Awardee: Dr. Yam Chi-ming, Stephen, lecturer in accountancy Programme: To pursue full-time studies for a postgraduate certificate in law at the City Polytechnic of Hong Kong. Period: September 1993 - May 1994 Awardee: Mrs. Yip Ngan Man-wai, Alice, Research Administration Officer, Research Administration Office Programme: To visit and learn about research administration in leading research universities in the USA. Period: 2nd - 13th August 1993 Awardee: Mr. Ng Yick-man, Andy, lecturer in accountancy Programme: To pursue part-time studies for a PhD degree at James Cook University of North Queensland, Australia. Period: Current academic year commencing February 1994 Awardee: Mrs. Lui So Yee-lai, Alice, lecturer in management Programme: To attend the International Teachers Programme for Educators in Management at INSTEAD, Fontainebleau, France.
