However he does admit that there is an inherent imbalance: 'Hong Kong understands more about the US to start with than vice versa. There is not enough interest in America about Hong Kong. We have to stir up interest.' Another item on the centre's agenda is the promotion of American studies in Hong Kong and Hong Kong studies in America. Here Dr. Deeney views Hong Kong as part of the Greater China. 'Since Hong Kong is going to be part of the PRC in 1997, the sooner the centre contacts the PRC in developing programmes that will be useful to the PRC, the better our future will look. We very much need their help and advice.' From the University's Standpoint On the part of the University, what are its objectives in housing the centre? Prof. Ambrose King, who represented the University in negotiating the arrangement some three years ago, reveals that in doing so, the University has in its mind the good of Hong Kong as a whole. 'Hong Kong as we know has developed rapidly into an international business and financial centre. And in the last 10 years or so, it has also emerged as a potentially powerful intellectual centre. In order to fully realize its potentialities, we need to develop its intellectual infrastructure. Just as when we want to fully realize its economic potential, we need to develop its physical and commercial infrastructure.' Importance of America in HK's Intellectual Advancement Prof. King further points out that for historical reasons, Hong Kong has had close links, intellectual and otherwise, with Britain; America however presents a different case. The United States has some 800 business units in Hong Kong, but how much does the average Hong Kong person know about America outside the business context? For the post- 1997 intellectual development of the territory. North America will overtake Britain in importance as the British connection w i l l definitely weaken. However despite America's status as a centre of intellectual activity, there hasn't been any comprehensive programme on the study of America in Hong Kong universities. There are a thousand things we need to do to advance Hong Kong's role as an intellectual centre and one of them, at least at this stage of its development, is to establish closer relationships with academic institutions in the United States in a systematic and organized manner.' The recognition of this need gave rise to the idea of establishing a centre given to promoting American studies in Hong Kong and vice versa, an idea which the University of Hong Kong and Baptist University also support. Who is the Greatest Beneficiary? Prof. King is gratified w i t h the pivotal role the University has played in launching the Hong Kong-America Center; he also admits that by the very fact of the centre being located on CUHK campus, the University is probably the greatest beneficiary. But he reiterates, 'The Hong Kong-America Center is not only here for the sake of CUHK — we're more broad-minded than that. It is for all academic institutions in Hong Kong. We felt that we should nurture it at its formative stage and the least we could do is to provide the physical space for its establishment. After that it can go to HKU, Baptist University or anywhere if 'The Hong Kong-America Center...is for all academic institutions in Hong Kong. Part of an Overall Effort to Achieve International Standing Prof. King also points out that this is not the first time the University has been chosen to accommodate academic centres of American origin. Back in 1988 the American Council of Learned Societies passed on to CUHK the management of the Universities Service Centre, a world- famous resource centre for contemporary China research. The centre is open to scholars from all over the world and its excellent management by the University for three years prompted the owners to donate its entire resources to the University in 1991. Since then it has become a permanent part of the University and has continued to render valuable services to international scholars specializing in China studies. The establishment of the Hong Kong- America Center is thus indicative of the University's persistence in strengthening its position as an influential academic institution in the region, and Hong Kong's position as a metropolis of the first water, not only economically but also intellectually. Class as usual Classes will not be suspended on 18th January. Teachers who have classes on that day may use their own discretion to make alternative arrangements i f they wish to attend the congregation. Robing Staff members joining the official procession should assemble by 2.30 p.m. in the robing room on the ground floor of Y.C. Liang Hall. Marshalling of the procession will begin at 2.40 p.m. on Central Avenue outside Y.C. Liang Hall. Traffic The car park opposite to the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall and the parking space on New Asia Road will be reserved for guests attending the ceremony. One lane of Central Avenue will also be reserved as parking space from 1.30 p.m. on congregation day. Appropriate traffic signs will be put up and campus guards will be on hand to assist motorists. BFC StaffCanteen temporarily closed The Benjamin Franklin Centre Staff Canteen will be closed from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on 18th January, to be used for reception after the ceremony. 邵逸夫爵士傑出訪問學人講座 Lecture by Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar 1996 人文地理學權威 Prof. Akin Mabogunje 將 於本月十一至二十日，以「邵逸夫爵士傑出 訪問學人」身分到訪逸夫書院，並於十七日 下午五時假逸夫書院大講堂主持公開講座， 講題爲「廿一世紀的非洲：最後一個投資新 天地所面臨的挑戰」。歡迎出席。 World renowned geographer Prof. A k in Mabogunje will visit Shaw College from 11th to 20th January as the 1996 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar. He will give a public lecture entitled 'Africa in the Twenty-first Century: Challenges of the Last Investment Frontier' on 17th January in the Shaw College lecture theatre. Prompt notification of such changes is essential for ensuring accuracy in the University's official records and publications such as the University Calendar, Bulletin and Newsletter.
