4 No. 138 4th January 1999 CUHK Newsletter 宣 布 事 項 ANNOUNCEMENTS 榮休講座教授 大學校董會接納了教務會的推 薦,頒授榮休講座教授銜予四位已 退休的講座教授,由一九九八年十 二月一日起生效,以表揚他們的學術成就和對 大學的貢獻。他們是音樂榮休講座教授紀大衛 教授、訊息工程學榮休講座教授周昌教授、系 統工程與工程管理學榮休講座教授林耀燊教 授,和建築學榮休講座教授李燦輝教授。 紀大衛教授 紀大衛教授服務香港中文大學二十六年, 於一九九六年九月三十日榮休。紀大衛教授在 劍橋大學修讀音樂,一九七零年出任本校音樂 系高級講師,一九八一年晉升為中大首位音樂 講座教授。紀大衛教授於一九七四至九二年間出任音樂系系主任。 紀大衛教授是多才多藝的音樂家,在中大期間,一直活躍於本地音樂事務,集鋼琴 家、指揮家、中提琴家、樂評人及作曲家於一身。他創作了大量中、西樂曲,包括為香港 中樂團而作的交響樂曲「旅程」、一首鋼琴協奏曲、清唱劇「美妙人生之歌」,以及多首室 樂作品。 音樂系在紀大衛教授出長期間發展迅速,除增設兼讀學士學位課程外,復相繼開辦多 項碩士課程,以及民族音樂學、音樂理論及音樂創作博士課程。 紀大衛教授推動本地音樂教育不遺餘力。他是香港多個音樂和藝術團體的委員’亦經 常為本港電台主持音樂教育節目。他曾在本港及澳門多項音樂比賽中擔任評判。一九九二 年,他獲頒英帝國員佐勳章,並在一九九六年獲得香港演藝學院頒授院士榮銜,以表揚他 對音樂及文化藝術的貢獻。 周昌教授 周昌教授於一九九八年七月十四日榮休。周教授於一九五零年畢業於美國田納西大 學,獲理學士學位;旋即往麻省理工學院深造’ 一九五二年獲頒理學碩士學位;一九五九 年獲紐約哥倫比亞大學工程科學博士學位。周教授加入中大服務之前,任教於哥倫比亞大 學達三十四年。 周昌教授於一九九一年加入中大,出任工程學院署理院長(其後獲選為院長)及訊息 工程學講座教授。在周教授的領導下,工程學院迅速發展成為一所設有五個學系,享譽國 際的工學院,在教學和研究方面均有卓越成就。機械與自動化工程學系的成立,更賴周教 授大力推動。此外,周教授曾於一九九一至九二年及一九九二至九三年分別兼任訊息工程 學系及計算機科學與工程學系系主任。周昌教授在推動本校的工程學教育及科研發展方 面,成績斐然。周教授曾出任大學校董會、教務會及行政與計劃委員會的成員,對大學的 整體發展貢獻良多。 周昌教授為國際知名的工程學者,熱衷於教育事業,著作豐富。周教授亦為電機及電 子工程師學會院士。他曾在中國內地、台灣、荷蘭、土耳其、葡萄牙及丹麥等地的著名大 學擔任訪問教授。 林耀燊教授 林耀燊教授於一九九七年十二月三十一日榮休。林教授一九六零年畢業於加拿大多倫 多大學,獲應用科學學士學位,旋即於美國華盛頓大學及伊利諾大學深造,分別於一九六 一及六六年取得理學碩士及哲學博士學位。 林教授專注研究資料結構及資料數據庫管理系統,他於一九六二至八五年間,服務於 萬國商業機器公司,曾主理多項研究計劃,包括轉換數據庫分布程序、辦公室程序自動化 及資訊管理等;其後受聘為美國海軍研究院電子計算學講座教授。 林教授於一九九一年三月起出任本校首位系統工程學講座教授,並成為系統工程與工 程管理學系的創系系主任,期間致力延聘優秀教師及擴充系內設備。該學系是本港首個同 類學系,目的是培訓優秀的先進科技人才,以支援工商業的資訊系統設計,配合本地工商 業的需求;除本科課程外,更開辦修課式及研究式碩士課程,以及博士課程。系內擁有完 善先進的電腦設施,支援教學及研究工作,並積極進行多項學術及應用研究,包括因應中 國經濟發展而由林教授主持的「本土化中文數據庫管理系統」。 李璨輝教授 李燦輝教授於一九九八年九月三日榮休。李教授一九五四年畢業於美國密西根大學, 隨即受聘於多間著名私人建築師公司及公營機構,專注都市規劃及設計;一九七零年,他 出任美國麻省理工學院教授,其後出任該校建築與都市規劃及研究學系主任。一九九零年 加入中大,出任建築學系創系系主任。 李教授為傑出的建築師,擁有豐富的教學及執業經驗。在他的領導之下,中大建築學 系的成績斐然:首批建築學學士於一九九四年畢業,一九九五年更開辦建築學碩士課程。 該系擁有先進完備的教學與研究設施,包括建築學圖書館、虛擬現實及多媒體的實驗室。 李教授策劃的建築學課程和研究項目,都強調建築物須因應使用者的需要而設計並 融和於周圍環境之中。在他的推動下,建築學系積極開展學術研究。該系自一九九四年 起,便在內地推動及進行城市住房研究,致力為內地提供高質素、高密度、具成本效益的 房屋。該系又成立研究中心,與內地的政府機關及學術機構合作進行多項有關中國城市住 房的研究,例如城市住宅型態及使用模式、住宅能耗調查及住宅地理資訊系統。 任職中大期間,李教授積極參與大學校董會、教務會、崇基學院及校園計劃委員會的 工作,對大學的整體發展貢獻良多。 Four Made Emeritus Professors The University Council has awarded emeritus professorship to four retired professors f r om 1st December 1998 in r e c o g n i t i on o f their outstanding academic achievements and distinguished service to the University: Prof. D a v id Gw i lt was awarded the title o f Emeritus Professor o f Music; Prof. Omar W i ng was awarded the title o f Emeritus Professor o f Information Engineering; Prof. Vincent L u m was awarded the title o f Emeritus Professor o f S y s t e ms E n g i n e e r i n g a n d E n g i n e e r i n g Management; and Prof. Tunney Lee was awarded the title o f Emeritus Professor o f Architecture. Prof. David W i l l i amG w i l t Prof. Da v id W i l l i am Gw i lt retired f r om the University on 30th September 1996 after 26 years o f distinguished service. Prof. Gw i lt studied music under the tutorship o f Robin Orr at Cambridge University. He joined the University as senior lecturer in music in 1970 and in 1981 became the first professor o f music o f the University. From 1974 to 1992, he was chairman o f the Department o f Music. A versatile musician, Prof. Gw i lt was active in the local musical scene throughout his long teaching career at the University. A renowned pianist, viola player, conductor, composer, and critic, Prof. Gw i lt has composed numerous wo r ks for Western as w e ll as Chinese instruments, including a symphony entitled The Journey for the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, a piano concerto, a cantata, and numerous pieces o f chamber music. Under his able chairship, the Department o f Music underwent phenomenal growth. The Part-time Undergraduate Degree Programme in Music was launched to meet the g r ow i ng needs of aspiring students in music. Postgraduate programmes were introduced which included an M.Phil. programme, an M A in composition and a Ph.D. in ethnomusicology, composition or theory. Prof. Gw i lt has been very enthusiastic in promoting music education in Hong Kong. He is a member o f many committees for the p r omo t i on o f music and the arts, and has also participated actively in radio programmes on music education. He was an adjudicator for many music competitions in Ho ng K o ng and Macau. Prof. Gw i lt was awarded an M B E in 1992 and Fellowship o f the Hong K o ng Academy for Performing Arts in 1996 in recognition o f his contributions to the promotion o f music, culture, and the arts. Prof. Omar Wing Prof. Omar W i ng retired f r om the University on 14th July 1998. Prof. W i ng graduated f r om the University o f Tennessee in the US w i t h a BS in electrical engineering in 1950, obtained his MS in electrical engineering f r om the Massachusetts Institute o f Technology in 1952, and his Eng.Sc.D. f r om Columbia University in 1959. Prior to j o i n i ng The Chinese University, Prof. W i n g taught at the Department o f Electrical Engineering at Co l umb ia University for 34 years. In 1991 Prof. W i ng joined The Chinese University as acting dean and later dean o f the Faculty o f Engineering and as professor o f i n f o r ma t i on engineering. Under his capable leadership, the faculty made remarkable progress during its formative years, quickly becoming an internationally-renowned faculty w i th five academic departments. The establishment o f the Department o f Mechanical and Automation Engineering was the result o f his enthusiastic promotion and hard work. In 1991-92, Prof. W i ng also served as chairman of the Department o f I n f o r ma t i on Engineering and in 1992-93, the Department o f Computer Science and Engineering. He was instrumental in the phenomenal development o f engineering studies and research at the University. As a member o f the University Council, the Senate and the Administrative and Planning Committee, Prof. W i ng made remarkable contributions to the overall development o f the University. A wo r ld renowned engineering expert and dedicated educator, Prof. W i ng is a Fellow o f the Institute o f Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He has published a rich collection o f journal papers and books and held visiting professorships in many well-known universities around the world. Prof. Vincent Lum Prof. Vincent L um retired from the University on 31st December 1997. After graduating f r om the University o f Toronto w i th a Bachelor's degree in applied science (engineering physics) in 1960, Prof. L um obtained his MS degree f r om the University o f Washington and his Ph.D. f r om the University o f Illinois in 1961 and 1966 respectively. A pioneer and expert in data structure and database management systems, Prof. L um engaged himself in research on information system analysis and application for over 25 years. He w o r k ed for I B M Corporation between 1962 and 1985, during w h i ch he initiated and managed a number o f computer research and development projects focussing on database and information management and procedure automation. Before j o i n i ng the University, he was professor o f computer science in the Naval Postgraduate School in the US. Prof. L u m was appointed founding chair o f systems engineering o f the University in Ma r ch 1991. He made remarkable contributions in the setting up o f the curriculum and programmes and the recruitment o f quality faculty members for the first systems engineering department in H o ng Kong. The non-traditional and multi-disciplinary programmes o f the department are designed to help students acquire advanced technologies in the construction o f information systems for supporting planning, operations, and decision making in business and industries. Under Prof. Lum's able leadership, the department underwent rapid expansion. Besides the Bachelor's Degree Programme, M.Phil., M.Sc., and Ph.D. programmes were launched. Prof . Tunney F.Lee Prof. Tunney F. Lee retired f r om the University on 3rd September 1998. A graduate in architecture f r om the University o f Michigan in 1954, Prof. Lee worked for various famous public institutions and architectural firms, specializing in urban planning and design. He was made professor o f the Massachusetts Institute o f Technology in 1970 and subsequently head of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies and Planning until he joined The Chinese 紀大衛教授 Prof. David W.
