An opening ceremony hosted by pro- vice-chancellor Prof. Ambrose King will be held at 4.30 p.m. on 21st January. With the Jianghan Plain of Hubei as its centre, the Jianghan Region is an important ancient cultural site along the Yangtze River. From the 1950s, apart from the discovery of fossils and cultural relics of the Palaeolithic period, Neolithic cultures have been found distributed over a massive area in distinct chronological order. Relics of the Shang and Zhou dynasties in the region reveal the predominance of the influence of Central China as shown in the ritual systems, writings, and bronzes. Those of the late Spring and Autumn period indicate that the Jianghan Region was almost completely under the influence of Chu culture, with some regional variations. During the Warring States period, Jianghan culture, with its complicated and delicate bronzes as well as colouful lacquerwares and textiles, became the representation of southern Chinese culture. The 98 exhibits on display date from the late Palaeolithic period of 50,000- 40,000 BP to the late Warring States period of 3rd century BC and include stone implements, pottery, jades, bronzes, gold wares, lacquerwares, and textiles. To go with the exhibition, the Art Museum will organize a half-day conference on 25th January from 2.30 to 5.00 p.m. in Room 124 of the Institute of Chinese Studies. The speakers are scholars from three participating museums and the lectures will be conducted in putonghua. Annual Leave Schemes for Staff Members on Terms of Service (B) and (C) The University Council has recently approved the revision of the annual leave schemes for staff members on Terms of Service (B) and (C) and equivalent terms with effect from 1st December 1998.
