Li, vice-chancellor, was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology on 12th November 1999. • Prof. Henry N.C. Wong, professor of chemistry, has been elected Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. • Prof. Dennis Lam, professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, was selected as one of the 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow for the year 2000 by the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. Service • Prof. Che Chun-tao, associate professor in the School of Chinese Medicine, was appointed by the Chief Executive of the HK S AR as a member of the Endangered Species Advisory Committee for two years from 1st October 1999. • Prof. Richard Ho, registrar, was re-appointed by the Secretary for Education and Manpower as a member of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation for two years from 1st October 1999. • Prof. Jack Cheng, professor in the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health and Welfare as a member of the Supplementary Medical Professions Council for three years from 1st October 1999. He has also been appointed as an honorary adviser to the Hong Kong Neuromuscular Disease Association from 1st November 1999 to 31st March 2001. Besides he has been appointed as a visiting professor of orthopaedics to Shanghai Medical University for 1999-2000. • Dr. Anthony James, director of the Laboratory Animal Services Centre, was appointed by the Secretary for Economic Services as a member of the An i mal Welfare Advisory Group for two years from 1st May 1999. • Prof. Rance Lee, professor o f sociology, has been appointed as a member o f the Humanities, Social Sciences an d Business Studies Panel of the Research Grants Council of Hong Kong for three years from 28th October 1999. • Prof. P.W. Liu, professor of economics, has been appointed as a member of the council and court of Lingnan University for two years from 22nd October 1999. • Prof. Ambrose King, professor of sociology, has been appointed as a member of the Council of the Open University of Hong Kong for three years from 1st October 1999. • Prof. Lau Oi-wah, professor in the Department of Chemistry, has been appointed as an adjunct associate professor of chemistry at the Hong Ko ng University of Science and Technology for three years from 1st January 2000. • Prof. Julian Critchley, professor o f clinical pharmacology, has been elected to the fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow. • Prof. Lam Ching Wan, associate professor in the Department of Chemical Pathology, has been admitted as a Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Pathologists and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Pathology). • Prof. Kw ok Siu-tong, professor in the Department of History, has been appointed as the Academic Adviser of the Fourth Council of the Guangzhou Association of Social Sciences Societies and an honorary research fellow of the Shenzhen Academy of Social Sciences from October 1999. • Prof. Chan Wing-wah, professor in the Department of Music, was re-elected as an executive member of the UNESCO International Society for Contemporary Music from 1999—2001. • Prof. Ip Wan-yim, assistant professor in the Department of Nursing, was winner of the 1999 Research Paper of the American Society of Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics. Contributions should be sent direct to that office for registration and verification before publication.) 第五十五屆大會(頒授學位典禮)及典禮日特別安排 ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE F I FTY - F I FTH CONGREGAT ION FOR THE CONFERMENT OF DEGREES 大學第五十五屆大會(頒授學位典禮)將於一九九 九年十二月九日(星期四)分兩部分舉行。典禮之第 一部分於上午十時在林蔭大道舉行,由大學校長李 國章教授主持,頒授榮譽博士學位、高級學位及學 士學位。 第二部分由成員書院、研究院和兼讀學士學位 課程分別為學士及碩士學位畢業生舉行畢業禮,依次由各書院院長、副校長楊綱 凱教授和副校長廖柏偉教授主持。時間及地點表列如下: 畢業典禮 時間 地點 聯合書院 下午十二時半至二時 邵逸夫堂 崇基學院 下午一時十五分至三時十五分 崇基禮拜堂 新亞書院 下午一時半至三時 林蔭大道 逸夫書院 下午三時至五時 邵逸夫堂 兼讀學士學位課程 下午三時半至五時 逸夫書院大講堂 碩士學位課程 下午三時半至五時 林蔭大道 披袍處 大學行政樓祖堯堂為披袍處。典禮行列準於上午九時四十分列隊,並於九時 五十五分離開祖堯堂。 交通 典禮當日,范克廉樓、富爾敦樓、大學行政樓、中國文化研究所、田家炳樓 及大學圖書館等停車場,皆保留予嘉賓及公務車輛專用。 邵逸夫堂對面停車場暫停開放 邵逸夫堂對面之停車場將闢作畢業生座席,該停車場由十一月二十六日至十 二月十二日暫停開放,以便蓋搭帳篷。 停課 醫科一、二年級及醫學科學增插學年學士學位課程是日停課。 范克廉樓敎職員及學生餐廳暫停服務 范克廉樓教職員餐廳及學生餐廳是日由上午七時半至下午三時暫停服務,以 便安排典禮後之茶會。快餐店亦於上午十一時半至下午二時半暫停營業,以舉行 兼讀學士學位課程畢業午餐會。 天雨安排 如遇天雨,典禮第一部分改在邵逸夫堂舉行;而新亞書院畢業典禮及碩士學 位課程畢業典禮則改在新亞書院體育館舉行。 The Fifty-fifth Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees w i ll be held in two parts on Thursday, 9th December 1999 . Parti The first part of the ceremony, to be presided at by Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, Vice-Chancellor of the University, w i ll be held at 10.00 a.m. at the University Mall. Honorary, higher, and first degrees w i ll be conferred. Part II The graduation ceremonies held by the four colleges and the Part-time Degree Programmes (PDP) for first-degree graduates, and the Master's Degree Graduation Ceremony will take place as follows: College/Programme Time Presiding Officer Venue United 12.30-2.00 p.m. Head of College Sir Run Run Shaw Hall Chung Chi 1.15-3.15p.m. Head of College Chung Chi Chapel New Asia Shaw 1.30-3.00 p.m. 3.00-5.00 p.m. Head of College Head of College University Mall Sir Run Run Shaw Hall Part-time Degree 3.30-5.00 p.m. Prof. P.W. Marshalling of the procession will begin at 9.40 a.m. The procession will leave the University Administration Building for the ceremonial grounds at 9.55 a.m. Traffic Car parks at the Benjamin Franklin Centre, John Fulton Centre, University Administration Building, Institute of Chinese Studies, Tin Ka Ping Building, and the University Library w i ll be reserved for guests with special parking labels. Car Park Opposite to Sir Run Run Shaw Hall Temporarily Closed The car park opposite to Sir Run Run Shaw Hall w i ll be used as a seating area for graduates. It will be temporarily closed from 26th November to 12th December for the erection of a canopy for the ceremony. Suspension of Classes Classes for Medicine Years 1, 2, and Intercalated Degree Programmes will be suspended for the day. Temporary Closure of BFC Canteens The Benjamin Franklin Centre staff canteen and student canteen w i ll be closed on that day from 7.30 a.m. to 3.00 p.m., as they w i ll be used for reception after Part I of the ceremony. The Fast Food Shop w i ll also be closed from 11.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m. for the lunch gathering of Part-time Degree Programmes graduates and their families. Wet Weather In case of wet weather, Part I of the ceremony w i ll be held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall while the New Asia College Graduation Ceremony and the Master's Degree Graduation Ceremony w i ll take place in the New Asia Gymnasium.
