2 No. 184 19th May 2001 CUHK Newsletter Memo r i al Service for Prof. Cheng Te-k 'un O ver 100 guests and members of the University attended the memorial service for Prof. Cheng Te-k'un, emeritus professor of fine arts, held in the lecture theatre of Shaw College on 2nd May. Dr. Chen Fong-ching, director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, gave an account of the life and work of Prof. Cheng on the occasion, and eulogies were delivered by Prof. Ambrose Y.C. King, pro-vice-chancellor, Prof. S.T. Kwok, dean of arts, and Dr. Tang Chung, director of the Centre for Chinese Art and Archaeology. Prof. Cheng was a world-renowned archaeologist who had made enormous contributions to the teaching, research, and development of Chinese art and archaeology both in Hong Kong and overseas. He taught Far-Eastern art and archaeology for over two decades at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, where he built a specialized library for the study of Chinese art and artifacts. In 1974, he was invited to serve as visiting professor of fine arts to The Chinese University. He later became dean of arts, chairman of the Department of Fine Arts, and then pro-vice-chancellor of the University. In 1978 he founded the Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art and served as its first director. Two years after his retirement in 1979, he was made honorary director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, a post he held between 1981 and 1986. And in recognition of his distinguished service to the University and his outstanding academic accomplishments, he was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Literature in 1981, and the title of Emeritus Professor of Fine Arts in 1982. Prof. Cheng passed away on 6th April 2001 at the age of 94. Forum Discusses Future of Air Cargo Industry A n open forum, entitled The Hong Kong A ir Cargo Industry at the Crossroads: Impacts of China's Accession to WTO and Direct L i nks Between Taiwan and Mainland', was organized by the Centre of Cyber Logistics of the Faculty of Business Administration on 27th April at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. China's accession to the WTO and direct links between Taiwan and the mainland imply that Hong Kong's air cargo industry is entering an era of unpre- cendented competition and opportunities. The forum was an occasion for the air cargo industry to exchange ideas on imperative issues and to explore how to make policy and other recommendations to the government and to the industry. Participants from academia, government, and industry in Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong reviewed current air cargo trends in Greater China, and discussed the recent development of the open sky policy. The forum also gave an overview of the IT infrastructure for the air cargo industry to compete in the e-commerce era. It concluded w i th a roundtable discussion on common issues confronting the industry today. Accoun t ancy School Ho l ds Annua l D i nner M embers of the CU Accounting Link and other guests attended the annual dinner of the School of Accountancy, held in the Four Seasons Ballroom of the New World Renaissance Hotel on 26th April. On the occasion, Mr. Dominic Y.T. Chan, director of audit of the HKSAR, delivered a talk on ' The Role of the Audit Commission and Its M i s s i on to I mp r o ve Performance and Accountability in the Public Sector'. The CU Accounting L i nk, a network designed to bridge the School of Accountancy with alumni and friends who are in support of its developments, currently has 700 members. These include graduates of the school's various degree and non-degree programmes, non- ac coun t i ng graduates of the University working in the field of accountancy, current and former staff, and friends from the industry and the profession. Li (right), presenting a souvenir to Mr. Dominic Chan Medical Students Wi n Prest igious Research Award Two doctoral students from the Department of Anatomical and Cellular Pathology of the Faculty of Medicine, Mr. Michael W.Y. Chan and Mr. Lee Tin-lap, won the Young Investigators' Award at the American Association of Cancer Research Meeting held in New Orleans from 24th to 28th March. This marked the fifth time graduate students of the department have won the award. This year, some 10,000 sc i en t i s ts attended the meeting, which is the largest c a n c e r r e s e a r ch meeting in the world, and a total of 5,100 a b s t r a c t s w e r e presented. About 10 papers were selected for the awards. M r . C h a n ' s paper was entitled 'Hypermethylation of Mu l t i p le Genes in Tumour Tissues and Voided Urine in Urinary Bladder Cancer Patients', and Mr. Lee's paper, 'Aberrant Hypermethylation of Death Associated Protein Kinase in Gastric Carcinoma and Serum Samples'.
