4,142 Degrees Conferred at 57 th Congregation T he University's 57th Congregation for the Conferment of Degrees was held on Thursday, 29th November at the University Mall. It was presided over by Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, the vice-chancellor. This year, five distinguished persons were awarded honorary doctorates. Dr. the Honourable Anson Chan (left 1), former Chief Secretary for Administration of the HKSAR was conferred the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. Dr. Gao Xingjian (left 2), renowned Chinese writer and Nobel laureate in literature 2000 was awarded the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa. Prof. Yuan Longping, an eminent agricultural scientist and director general of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. The degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa, went to two persons: Dr. George Hung Hon-Cheung (left 3), chairman of the Board of Trustees of Chung Chi College and an alumnus of the University who has rendered long and outstanding service to the University and the College; and Dr. Eleanor Wong (right 1), a well-known textile industrialist and philanthropist. Their citations were written and delivered by Prof. Serena Jin and Prof. David Parker, the public orators, and Dr. Anson Chan addressed the congregation on behalf of the honorary graduates. Dr. Yuan Longping wa s undul y delaye d by a n officia l trip t o Sout h America and could not arrive i n Hong Kong i n time to attend the congregation. He was subsequently presented the relevant certificates by the vice-chancellor on his visit t o the campus on 7th December . Apart from the five honorary doctorates, a total of 4,137 degrees were conferred on the occasion. These included seven Doctor of Medicine degrees , 114 Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and the first batch of four Doctor of Education degrees conferred b y th e University . A tota l o f 1,36 2 postgraduat e students received their Master's degrees , while 2,650 student s were awarded Bachelor's degrees, among whom were the first batch o f graduates o f the Quantitative Financ e Programme , the Material s Scienc e Programme , an d th e Molecula r Biotechnology Programme . On the same day, the four colleges , the Part-time Degre e Programmes, and the Graduate School also held graduation ceremonies fo r thei r students . Thomas C.W. Male, professor of chemistry, has been elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences . Prof. Mak obtained his B.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in 1960 and 1973 respectively from the Universit y of British Columbia. He subsequently worked as a NASA Research Associate in the Crystallograph y Department of the University of Pittsburgh, and then as assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Western Ontario . H e joined The Chines e Universit y a s lecturer i n chemistr y i n 1969 , and was promoted to chair professor i n 1982 . He was formerly chairma n of the Department o f Chemistry an d dean of science. He is currently directo r o f the Institute of Science and Technology. Prof. Mak has published over 800 papers in international journals, including 333 as the principal author. He has made many contributions to the promotion of academic exchange between Hong Kong and mainland China and to the nurturing o f young researchers i n China.
