Funding Support for CUHK Research T he following three research projects undertaken by faculty members of the University have attracted funding support locally: • Chinese Herbal Medicine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome: From Basic Mechanism to Clinical Cure (HK$4,738,000) Sponsor: Hong Kong Jockey Club Institute of Chinese Medicine Ltd. Principal investigator: Prof. Joseph Sung (Department of Medicine and Therapeutics) • Inquiry-based Experiments and Collaborative Learning in Chemistry (HK$452,000) Sponsor: Quality Education Fund Principal investigator: Prof. Cheung Sin-pui (Department of Curriculum and Instruction) • Transforming Schools into Learning Organizations (HK$2,890,000) Sponsor: Quality Education Fund Principal investigator: Prof. Pang Sun-keung (Hong Kong Centre for the Development of Educational Leadership) Chung Chi Summer Programmes A myriad of academic and extracurricular programmes were organized by Chung Chi College for its students in the summer of 2004: Summer School A total of 113 Chung Chi students attended summer schools in world famous universities for three to eight weeks between May and August 2004 under the Chung Chi College Summer Study Abroad Programme 2003-4. The universities covered in the programme included UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, Ha r va rd Un i ve r s i t y, and Yale University in the US, and the University of Cambridge in the UK. German Trips Thirty-five students of Chung Chi College participated in two study trips to Germany held from 23rdMay to 11th June and from 20th June to 9th July respectively. Led by Mr. Ulrich Wannagat of the Department of Modem Languages and Intercultural Studies,the students spent 14 days in Rothenburg and five i n Berlin. They attended an elementary German language course at the Goethe Institute and engaged in all kinds of cultural activities and visits. There were tours to Humboldt University. Nazi concentration camps, the German Parliament,the remains of the Berlin Wall, museums, and beer gardens. French Trip Twenty students of Chung Chi College spent 19 days in Bordeaux and Paris on a study trip named 'Exploration of French Society' from 11th to 30th July. The delegation was led by Mrs. Angeline Kwok, college secretary, and Ms. Le Xuan Thu of the Department of Modem Languages and Intercultural Studies. Besides attending a 30-hour elementary French course at the Alliance Fran ç aise, Bordeaux, the students visited a fire station, the M é dicin Sans Frontier logistic platform, UNESCO, the Senate, the National Assembly, and museums. Outward Bound A total of 106 students attended a seven-day training course at the training base of Outward Bound Hong Kong in Sai Kung under the Chung Chi College Outward Bound Training Programme 2003-4. The programme enabled the participants to develop leadership and problem-solving skills. Each participant was awarded a certificate of achievement by Outward Bound Hong Kong at the end of the programme. Servic e t oth eCommunit y and Internationa l Organization s • Prof. Lau Wan Yee Joseph, professor of surgery, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Medical Council of Hong Kong from 25th August 2004 to 23rd January 2006. • Prof. Ng Ho Keung, professor of anatomical and cellular pathology, has been re-nominated to serve as a member of the Licentiate Committee of the Medical Council of Hong Kong for another three years from 22nd January 2005. • Prof. Tony Gin, professor of anaesthesia and intensive care, has been re-nominated to serve as a member of the Education and Accreditation Committee of the Medical Council of Hong Kong for another three years from 6th February 2005. • Prof. Lau Talc Fai Joseph, director of Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, has been appointed as a member of the Board of Directors of AIDS Concern for one year from 28th August 2004. Award Prof. Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, professor of chemical pathology, was recently made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
