CC Celebrates 53rd Anniversary C hung Chi College celebrated its 53rd anniversary on 29th October, the college's Founders' Day. The celebratory events including a Student Festival were organized jointly by the college, its student union, and its alumni association. During the thanksgiving service, Prof. Lawrence J. Lau (right 1), vice- chancellor of the University, presented Kun k le and Pommerenke Grand Scholarships to four outstanding Chung Chi students, and Prof. Leung Yuen- sang, professor of history, was officially installed as the new college head. The installation ceremony was officiated by Mr. Karl C. Kwok, chairman of the College Board of Trustees. In the evening, 2,000 students, staff, alumni, and friends of the college attended the Feast-for-a-Thousand, a popular annual celebratory event that began in 1976. 30th October was designated as the college's Alumni Day this year. Highlights of the day's programmes included atea reception hosted by the college head and a reunion dinner on campus. UC's 48th Anniversary Celebrations U nited College celebrated its 48th anniversary on 15th October 2004. Celebrations kicked off with a ceremony held at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Mr. Shum Choi Sang (centre), chairman of the United College Board of Trustees, and Mr. Lam Chiu Ying, director of the Hong Kong Observatory, officiated at the ceremony. A college birthday party was held on the college campus after the ceremony. Apart from a lion dance performed by the college Chinese Martial Arts Society, there was a special session to congratulate the college's year 1 social work student, Mr. Lau Yan Chi (seated), for winning the gold medal in the Boccia Mixed Pairs event at the 2004 Athens Paralympics. This was followed by the anniversary luncheon held at the Staff Common Room, which was attended by over 70 trustees, donors, alumni, as well as members and guests of the college and the University. Anniversary activities culminated with the Feast-for-a-Thousand held in the evening, which boasted over 1,200 dinners in attendance. Shaw Hosts First Fellowship Lunch T hirty Shaw alumni working in CUHK and fellow Shaw staff members attended the first ever 'Fellowship Lunch for Shaw Alumni' in CUHK, held on 28th October 2004 at Marine View. College Head Prof. Ching Pak-chung and chairman of the Alumni Affairs Committee, Prof. Ngai Ngan-pun thanked all attending alumni and guests for their enthusiastic support towards the further development of alumni relations at Shaw College. The fellowship lunch marked the first of a series of alumni activities scheduled for the year. APIBPresents PECTEL Trainer Certificates t o Police Trainers T hirteen trainers from the Hong Kong Police Force were presented the Peer Coaching Through Empathetic L i s t en i ng (PECTEL) Trainer Certificate by the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business on 11th October 2004. The certificate presentation ceremony, which took place at the University's MBA Town Centre, was hosted by Prof. Leslie Young, executive director of APIB. Servic e t oth eCommunit y an d Internationa l Organization s • Prof. Chan Chi Fai Andrew, professor in the Department of Marketing, has been re-appointed by the Financial Secretary as a member of the Hong Kong Tourism Board for three years from 1st November 2004. • Prof. Lau Woon Ming Leo, dean of science, has been appointed by the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology as a member of the Accreditation Advisory Board on an ad personam basis for two years from 1 st November 2004. • Prof. Tang Kwong Leung, professor of social work, has been re-appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Advisory Committee on Social Work Training and Manpower Training for one year from 1st November 2004. • Prof. Chau Pak Chun Janita, associate professor in the Nethersole School of Nursing, has been re-appointed by the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong to serve as a co-opted member of the Chinese Medicine Examination Subcommittee for two years from 1st November 2004. • Prof. Yum Talc Shing Peter, dean of engineering, has been invited by Southeast University to serve as a visiting professor from June 2002. He has also been appointed as a guest professor of Huazhong University of Science and Technology from December 2002 to December 2004. 任德盛教授亦獲聘請 為浙江大學信息科學與工程學院客座教授。 • Prof. Chan Wing Wah, professor of music, attended the administrative council meeting and annual general assembly of the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers in Seoul, Korea from 17th to 19th October 2004. He was also chief delegate of Hong Kong in the 24th Asian Composers League Conference and Festival in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Israel from 20th to 24th October 2004. In addition to presenting a report on Hong Kong, his composition Moondance was performed in Jerusalem. Award Prof. Lo Yuk Ming Dennis, professor of chemical pathology, has been promoted to Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists effective from 4th January 2005.
