She has also been appointed as President-Elect of the International Psychogeriatric Association for two years from September 2006. • Prof. Lawrence J. Lau, vice-chancellor, has been appointed by the Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology on an ad personam basis as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation for two years from 1st July 2005. • Prof. Chau Kwai Cheong, associate professor in the Department of Geography and Resource Management, has been appointed by the Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works as the chairman of the Country and Marine Parks Board for two years from 1st September 2005. • Prof. Chan Yan Keung Thomas, professor in the Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for two years from 4th July 2005. He has also been re-nominated by the University to serve as a member of the Licentiate Committee of the Medical Council of Hong Kong for another term of three years from 10th November 2005. • Prof. Tung Ho Suk Ching Sara, professor in the of Department of Marketing, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Advisory Committee on Agriculture and Fisheries for two years from 1st June 2005. • Prof. Fok Tai Fai, dean of medicine, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Hong Kong Advisory Council on AIDS for three years from 1st August 2005. • Prof. Cheung Mui Ching Fanny, professor of psychology, has been appointed by the Secretary for Health, Welfare and Food as a member of the Hong Kong Advisory Council on AIDS for three years from 1st August 2005. • Mrs. Amelia Wong, student affairs officer, has been appointed by the Secretary for Education and Manpower as an institutional representative of the University to the Joint Committee on Student Finance from 2nd June 2005 to 31st May 2006. • Prof. Lee Shui Shan, professor of infectious diseases, has been appointed as an honorary professor of The National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention from February 2005. He has also been appointed as an honorary clinical consultant of the Department of Health for three years from 1 st April 2005 and as a member of the Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service Expert Panel on Blood and Blood Products Safety of the Hospital Authority. • Prof. Rance Lee, professor of sociology, has been re-appointed as a member of the Research Grants Council for two years from 1st July 2005. He has also been invited to serve as the chairman of the Social Sciences Advisory Board of Lingnan University for three years from 1st September 2005. • Prof. Dennis Lo Yuk Ming, professor of chemical pathology, has been appointed as a member of the Research Grants Council for two years from 1st July 2005. • Prof. Lee Tak Shing Dominic, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, has been appointed as a member of the Research Advisory Group of the Narcotics Division of the Government Secretariat for two years from 1st July 2005. • Prof. Che Chun Tao, professor in the School of Chinese Medicine, has been re-appointed by the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong as a member of the Committee on Assessment of Chinese Medicine Degree Courses for two years from 7th June 2005. • Prof. Lin Ge, professor in the Department of Pharmacology, has been re-appointed to the Specialist Panel of the Chinese Medicine Council of Hong Kong for another term of one year. • Prof. Man Yee Fun Evelyn, assistant professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, has been appointed to the Standing Committee on Language Education and Research for two years from 1st July 2005. • Prof. Leung Kwok Sui, professor of orthopaedics and traumatology, has been appointed as a member of the Criminal and Law Enforcement Injuries Compensation Boards for two years from 19th June 2005. • Prof. Lau Wan Yee Joseph, professor of surgery, has been re-nominated by the University to serve as a member of the Medical Council of Hong Kong for another term of three years from 24th January 2006. • Mr. Stephen Ng, director of special projects, has been invited to join the Hospital Authority Public Complaints Committee for two years from 2005. • Prof. Leslie Lo, professor of educational administration and policy, has been re-appointed as a member of the Education Commission for two years from 1st July 2005. • Prof. Lau Tze Kin, professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, has been nominated to succeed Prof. T. F. Fok to serve as a member of the Regional Advisory Committee of the New Territories representing the University from April 2005 to 31 st March 2006. • Prof. Suzanne Ho Chan Sut Ying, professor of community and family medicine, has been appointed as a member of the Regional Advisory Committee of the New Territories representing Cheshire Home (Shatin) from 20th May 2005 to 31st March 2006. • Prof. Yeung Chung Kwong, professor of surgery, has been re-nominated by the University to serve as an assessor of the Medical Council for one year from 5th September 2005. • Prof. Wing Yun Kwok, professor in the Department of Psychiatry, has been re-nominated by the University to serve as an assessor of the Medical Council for one year from 5th September 2005. • Prof. Lai Bo San Paul, professor in the Department of Surgery, has been appointed as a visiting professor at the Medical College of Shantou University from 27th April 2005. • Prof. Lau Tak Fai Joseph, director of Centre for Epidemiology and Biostatistics, has been appointed as a social medicine consultant of the Shenzhen Research Institute for Family Planning for three years from May 2005. • Prof. Chan Wing Wah, professor of music, has been invited to serve as an adjudicator for the 5th Agosto International Composition Contest in Bologna, Italy from 9th to 13th June 2005. His chamber music 'Summer Day' was performed in Brienz and Bern, Switzerland on 18th and 19th June 2005. He also conducted the Hong Kong Oratorio Society and Hong Kong Strings for two concerts in Tuen Mun Town Hall and Shatin Town Hall on 25th June and 3rd July 2005 respectively. • Prof. Chan Kai Ming Cavor, professor of orthopaedics and traumatology, has been nominated as the chairman of the President Advisors Council of the Asian Federation of Sports Medicine from 2005. • Prof. Ho Wing Shing John, associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry, has been invited to serve as a member of the editorial board of two international journals, Current Medicinal Chemistry Anti-Cancer Agents and Recent Patent Reviews on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery. He has also been invited to serve as a guest editor of an international journal. Protein and Peptide Letters. • Prof. Chan Hsiao Chang, professor in the Department of Physiology, has been appointed as a visiting professor of Nanjing Medical University from May 2001, of Zhengzhou from 8th May 2001, of Chongqing University of Medical Sciences from 10th October 2003, of the Cancer Centre at Sun Yat-sen University for three years from September 2004, and of the China Medical University from 25th November 2004. Awards • Prof. Jack Cheng Chun Yiu, pro-vice-chancellor and professor of orthopaedics and traumatology, was awarded the honorary title of Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) by the International Union of Societies for Biomaterials Science and Engineering in 2004. Prof. Cheng is one of only 12 biomaterials scientists in China being awarded this honorary title to date. • Prof. Yu Tak Sun Ignatius, professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, has been elected to the fellowship of the Faculty of Public Health of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom [FFPH(UK)] on 1st February 2005. • Prof. Albert Lee, professor in the Department of Community and Family Medicine, has been awarded Fellow of Faculty of Public Health by the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom [FFPH(UK)] in 2005, and Fellow of Royal College of Physicians in Ireland [FRCP (Irel)] in 2005. • Prof. Yau Houmin, professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, and Dr. Tan Sitong, postdoctoral fellow in the department, received the Best Paper Award for Operations Engineering by the Institute of Industrial Engineers in January 2005. Their paper was entitled 'Designing an Assembly Process with Stochastic Material Arrivals' and it was published in IIE Transactions (Vol.35, 2003, 803-815). Prof. Yan's other paper in supply chain coordination entitled 'Coordination of Supply Chains with Risk-Averse Agents' was award the Wickhan-Skinner Best Paper Award by the Society of Production and Operations Management in 2004. • Prof. Xiao Jin, associate professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Policy, has been awarded the 2004 Richard A. Swanson Research Excellence Award for her article, co- authored with Prof. Mun C. Tsang at Columbia University, entitled 'Determinants of Participation and Nonparticipation in Job-Related Education and Training in Shenzhen, China' by Academy of Human Resource Development, USA.
