IPMBAB’s mission is to create and combine innovations frombasic science researchand state-of-the-art biotechnology with the traditional wisdom of breeders/farmers and China’s rich elite germplasm resources, to address the issue of food security, with emphasis on the improvement of major staple and economic crops such as rice and soybean. IPMBAB will generate products of high impact through the application of technologies, and will train high quality researchers for the rapidly developing and globalizing communities in Hong Kong, China, and beyond. IPMBAB is strengthening partnership with its Mainland counterparts while extending its international collaboration network. About eight years ago, its team members were among the first Hong Kong scientists to initiate close collaborations with important agricultural institutes in China (such as the China Hybrid Rice Centre led by the father of hybrid rice Prof. Yuan Longping, The Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Yangzhou University), and more recently, with the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a top plant biology research institute. In fact this IPMBAB project is a component of the ProVitaMinRice Consortium in the Grand Challenges in Global Health Initiative of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. IPMBAB is led by Prof. Samuel S.M. Sun (Director, and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, plant biotechnology) with core members of different expertise, including Prof. Lam Hon-ming (Deputy Director, plant molecular biology), Prof. Fung Ming-chiu (biosafety and bioactivity), Prof. Guo Dianjian (metabolomics), Prof. Jiang Liwen (plant cell biology), Prof. Ngai Sai-ming (proteomics), and Prof. Wong Yum-shing (phytochemistry). The core group will expand to include new members with the relevant expertise and excellent research track record. Sun, Prof. Lam Hon-ming, Prof. Ngai Sai-ming, and Prof. Fung Ming-chiu N ew infectious diseases and new problems of existing infectious disease continue to threaten the health of Hong Kong and the world. The Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases was established in October 2003 to conduct research and provide professional training in infectious diseases. In recognition of a generous donation of HK$25 million by Dr. Stanley Ho, G.B.S., to support research on infectious diseases, The Chinese University of Hong Kong named the Centre after Dr. Ho. The naming ceremony of the Stanley Ho Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases was held at the Prince of Wales Hospital on 16thNovember.
