No. 406, 4.11.2012 7 伍絜宜慈善基金捐助胡秀英植物標本館 Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation Supports Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium 伍絜宜慈善基金捐贈八百萬元支持胡秀英植物標本館的科研、教育和社會服務,包括收集及保存香港受保護植物, 鑒定經濟植物和藥用植物,建立網站、訪客中心和電子資料庫,以及舉辦教育課程及義工活動,推動植物學研究,加 深公眾對植物的認識。胡秀英植物標本館收藏約三萬八千項植物標本,絕大部分由已故中醫學榮譽講座教授、生命科 學學院名譽高級研究員胡秀英教授搜集整理,大學以胡教授之名命名標本館,以紀念胡教授對植物研究的傑出貢獻。 Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation has donated HK$8 million in support of research, education and social service programmes of the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium. These include the collection and preservation of protected native flora; research on authentication of economic and medicinal plants; setting up a website, visitor centre and an online database; organize educational activities and volunteer programmes to promote botanical research and transfer knowledge to the community. The Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium houses a collection of about 38,000 plant specimens, mostly collected and archived by the late Prof. Hu Shiu-ying, honorary professor of Chinese Medicine and honorary senior research fellow of the School of Life Sciences. The University named the herbarium after Professor Hu to commemorate her lifelong devotion and contributions to botanical research. 李大拔獲選美國國家醫學 研究院院士 Albert Lee Elected to Institute of Medicine 賽馬會公共衞生及基層 醫療學院教授兼健康教 育及促進健康中心總監 李大拔教授獲選為美國 國家醫學研究院新任外 籍院士。美國國家醫學 研究院院士被視為公共 衞生及醫學領域的最高 榮譽,李教授是今年獲 選的十位新任外籍院士 之一。  Prof. Albert Lee, professor and founding director of Centre for Health Education and Health Promotion of the Jockey Club School of Public Health and Primary Care of CUHK, has been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM). Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honours in the fields of health and medicine, and Professor Lee is one of the 10 foreign associates recently elected by the IOM.   博士生獲AMS-IAUC學生獎 PhD Students Receive AMS- IAUC Student Awards 建築學院博士研究生劉家麟( 左 )和袁超( 右 )在第八屆 國際都市氣候會議獲美國氣象學會和國際都市氣候協會 聯合頒發AMS-IAUC學生獎。劉家麟根據城市化效應對 氣溫變化的影響,為地區層面的氣候變化預測提供基礎 資訊。袁超則以流體力學知識分析城市模型,研究城市 形態對行人高度風環境的影響。 Kevin Lau ( left ) and Yuan Chao ( right ), PhD students of the School of Architecture, received the AMS-IAUC Student Award in the 8th International Conference on Urban Climate in Dublin. The award was jointly presented by the American Meteorological Society and the International Association of Urban Climate. Lau’s study examined the effect of urbanization based on past temperature variability and provides baseline information for the prediction of future climate change at district level. Yuan’s study investigated the effect of urban morphology on pedestrian-level wind environment by using computational fluid dynamics simulation and morphometric method. 東日本地震災後重建展覽 Rebuilding East Japan Quake Zone Exhibition 由日本國際交流基金、中大建築學院和日本駐香港總領事館合辦的「日本建築師的應對方法:3.11東日本大地震災後 重建方案展」,於10月19日至11月7日在綜合教學大樓舉行。開幕當日舉行了「日本與中國的地震災後重建」研討會,邀 請日本東北大學研究所五十嵐太郎教授( 右四 )、建築師迫慶一郎先生( 左四 )、以及中大建築學院朱競翔教授( 左一 ) 主講,總結東日本及四川大地震的經驗,探討重建災區及未來建築的發展路向。 Organized by the Japan Foundation, the School of Architecture of CUHK, and the Consulate-General of Japan in Hong Kong, the exhibition ‘How Did Architects Respond Immediately after 3/11 (The Great East Japan Earthquake)?’ runs from 19 October to 7 November in the Integrated Teaching Building. On 19 October, a seminar titled ‘Post- quake Rebuilding Works in Japan and China’ was held featuring Prof. Taro Igarashi ( 4th right ), associate professor of Tohoku University; architect Mr. Keiichiro Sako ( 4th left ), and Prof. Zhu Jingxiang ( 1st left ), School of Architecture, CUHK. The speakers shared their experience of the earthquakes in Eastern Japan and Sichuan, and investigated the rebuilding strategies and future development of building and architecture.
