They have a lot of respect for their teachers, while maintaining close, affectionate relationships with them. They are also immensely creative, always keen to establish different kinds of societies and organize activities. It is good to know students enjoy both studies and school life.’ Professor Xu’s care for students goes far beyond that. The professor famed for his research on robots is used to penning down his reflections during his waits at airport lounges in between official visits. These short pieces, published on social media platforms, share with students his thoughts and experiences. In one of the talks which was wrapping up well past nine, when rain was pouring down outside, we saw some people distributing to the attending parents umbrellas with the University’s name and telling them that ‘this is a university truly dedicated to nurturing talent’. It transpired that they were parents of our current students. Having seen what improvements their children had made in more ways than one, these parents had voluntarily had some umbrellas made to promote the school to other parents.” Professor Xu added that parents had now become CUHK (SZ)’s best ambassadors and spokespersons. Apart from introducing the school among their social circles and on websites, they organize promotional activities from time to time of their own accord. For the brilliant track record achieved by CUHK (SZ) within a mere four years, Professor Xu offered four explanations: (1) the right positioning, with an international outlook and humanistic orientation appealing to the general public; (2) an apposite location; (3) first-class teaching and learning, made possible by the best students and teachers; (4) the support of CUHK and Shenzhen.
