Taking CUHK’s Educational Philosophy Northward 15 Lin Zhen Statistics Year 4, School of Science and Engineering A native of Zhejiang Province, Lin Zhen grew up in Shenzhen. He appreciates the college system of CUHK (SZ). ‘I enjoy exchanging ideas with students from other disciplines, which broadens my knowledge base. The credit system provides great autonomy in selecting courses. My learning is greatly facilitated by dedicated teachers together with the use of English in teaching, exchange programmes and teaching facilities. My most unforgettable experience was participating in the signalling research led by Prof. Tom Z.Q. Luo , Vice-President, from which I got to publish an article and a chance to present the research at an IEEE conference held in California in October 2018. Alex Hsu Applied Mathematics Year 2, School of Science and Engineering Born in Taiwan, Alex Hsu spent his primary and secondary school years in Shenzhen where his father worked. He was the top science stream scorer among the candidates from Guangdong Province in 2017. ‘I was drawn to CUHK (SZ) by the use of English as the medium of instruction and the free learning atmosphere. I always set high standards for myself. That’s why I have not only tried my best to complete every assignment throughout my undergraduate studies, but also read every reference recommended by the teachers. It’s tough but rewarding. There are various student activities for us to participate in. But I could only join some of them, e.g., the high-table dinners, due to my tight class schedule and engagement in teachers’ research work.’
