GREATER BAY AREA | 50 The Road to Greater Bay Area (GBA) The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has been actively taking part in the development and engagement in the Greater Bay Area (GBA), creating synergies that have grown in scale and intensity over the last 10 years. Being the first university in Hong Kong that established presence in the GBA, CUHK has founded the Shenzhen Institute of Advanced Technology in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shenzhen Municipal Government in 2006. Afterwards, CUHK started to build the CUHK Shenzhen Research Institute (SZRI) in 2007, which was eventually completed in November 2011. In 2012, the State Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK(SZ)), which officially opened for admission in 2014. In 2018, CUHK(SZ) saw the first batch of graduates, while SZRI, also in the same year, founded the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Hub. With a view to establishing a world-class scientific and technological innovation centre in Guangdong-Hong Kong- Macao Greater Bay Area, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between CUHK and Guangzhou Regenerative Medicine and Health Guangdong Laboratory in 2019. In 2020, CUHK received formal approval to establish the CUHK Hong Kong—Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Research Institute (Futian). The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Office was also founded in the same year, enabling alumni, professors, and students to have better connectivity and adaptability when they carry out innovative and technological endeavours in GBA.
