The following staffing arrangements for Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and Chinese New Year's Eve have been endorsed by the University since 1983 and will apply on 24th and 31st December 1998 and 15th Febraury 1999: 1. For essential service units such as the Health Service, the Library System, the Operation Unit of the Computer Services Centre, the Security Unit, the Transport Unit, and the Maintenance Office of the Estates Management Office, a task force should remain on duty to provide basic services. 2. For all other offices in the University, a skeleton crew should be appointed to be on duty on each morning to handle urgent matters and enquiries. These offices will be closed in the afternoon. 3. The skeleton staff on duty on those mornings will be given compensation leave of half a day. Staff BusArrangements Subscribers to the University staff bus service please note that the Transport Unit has arranged for the homing staff bus to leave the Benjamin Franklin Centre large car park at 12.55 p.m. on Christmas Eve (24th December), New Year's Eve (31st December), and Chinese New Year's Eve (15th February). 防止賄賂條例 Gifts? Bribery? 根據本港條例,香港中文大學為公共機構,並受《防止賄賂條例》之管制。條例中第 三條〈接受利益規例〉及第四條〈賄賂條例〉旁及所有公共機構僱員。 聖誕節、元旦及農曆新年將至,本校僱員擬贈送或收受禮品,而又不能確定該等贈受 是否抵觸《防止賄賂條例》,請先參閱條例之有關細節。 《防止賄賂條例》原文單行本分存大學各圖書館和新聞及公共關係處(碧秋樓三樓), 以備同人參考。 The University is a public body listed under the Schedule of the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance (CAP 201, Law of Hong Kong). A ll University employees are classified as 'public servants' under the ordinance and should be wary of accepting gifts which could be construed as being offered to them in connection with their 'public' capacities. As the Christmas and New Year holidays are approaching, members of the staff who wish to give away or accept any gifts in this festive season and are in doubt as to whether such gifts are permissible under the law should first consult the Prevention of Bribery Ordinance. Copies of the ordinance are available for reference at the University Library and its branch libraries, as well as at the Information and Public Relations Office (2nd floor, Pi Ch'iu Building). 教職員及配偶國粵語課程 Putonghua and Cantonese Courses for Staff and Spouses 新雅中國語文研習所由一九九九年一月十二日至四月十三日於方樹泉樓再度為本校教 職員及其配偶舉辦下列國、粵語課程,上課時間暫定星期二及四下午五時至六時五十分。 (一)供外籍教職員及其配偶選修之初級國語課程。 (二)供外籍教職員及其配偶選修之初級粵語課程。 (三)供粵籍教職員及其配偶選修之初級國語課程。 (四)供非粵籍教職員及其配偶選修之初級粵語課程。 以上各課程每班限額八人,少於四人不開班,按報名先後收錄。學費全期六千二百 元,聘任期不少於兩年之全職教職員及其配偶,如未獲任何語言學習資助者,可獲大學津 貼學費百分之四十。 有意就學者請於一九九九年一月五日前與該研習所聯絡(內線六七二七)。 The New Asia-Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre w i ll again offer Putonghua and Cantonese courses to the University's staff and spouses. From 12th January to 13th Ap r il 1999, the following courses have been tentatively scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday from 5.00 p.m. to 6.50 p.m. at the Fong Shu Chuen Building: (1) Beginner's course in Putonghua for foreigners. (2) Beginner's course in Cantonese for foreigners. (3) Beginner's course in Putonghua for non-Putonghua speakers of Chinese origin. (4) Beginner's course in Cantonese for non-Cantonese speakers of Chinese origin. The size of each class is limited to eight students and the minimum number of students to form a class is four. Enrolment will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Basic tuition fee for each course is HK$6,200. The University will subsidize 40 per cent of the tuition fee for all full-time academic and administrative staff as well as their spouses who are expected to be with the University for at least two years, and who are not receiving a language study subsidy from any other source. New Service on Library Homepage LEXIS-NEXIS Academic Universe, a new web-based service which allows unlimited web access to the LEXIS-NEXIS databases, is now available on the Library Homepage. More than 5,000 news, business, legal and reference databases with millions of full-text articles are accessible. On the Library Homepage (http://www.lib.cuhk.edu.hk ), click on L EX I S - NEX IS Academic Universe ( http://www.lexis-nexis.com/universe ) to access the service. According to the license agreement, the service can be used by CUHK staff and students only and must be accessed via the CUHK Campus Network. Beat Drugs Fund Invites Applications Applications to the Beat Drugs Fund are invited from anti-drug projects commencing in or after April 1999. The deadline for application is 31st December 1998. The $350 million Beat Drugs Fund was established by the government in March 1996 to support worthwhile and non-profit-making anti-drug projects. The date of re-opening will be announced later. 新亞金禧院慶籌款演奏會暨晚宴 New Asia's 50th Anniversary Celebrations 新亞書院明年創校五十周年。在邁進二十一世紀之際,新亞書院擬籌募成立「新亞基 金」,用以賡續並弘揚中華文化、推廣中西教育,以及資助來年一系列的金禧院慶活動。 該院擬舉辦之活動有:「中國文化的檢討與前瞻」國際學術會議,金禧紀念講座,金 禧學術叢書,學系學術研討會,海內外校友院慶活動,以新亞書院歷史使命為主題之學生 興趣小組活動,金禧紀念體育活動,國樂演奏會,以及其他活動。 該院邀請蜚聲國際的鋼琴家傅聰專程來港,於本月八日晚假香港文化中心舉行籌款演 奏會,並於演奏會後假半島酒店舉行晚宴。傅聰一九三四年生於上海,曾多次奪得國際獎 項,有「鋼琴詩人」美譽,《時代週刊》更譽之為「當今最偉大的中國音樂家」。傅聰以演奏 蕭邦作品最為人稱頌,而簫邦作品亦最能表達他的愛國思鄉情懷。這次演奏會,傅先生將 清一色演奏蕭邦名曲,以饗知音。演奏會門票於城市電腦售票網(電話訂票二七三四九零 零九)公開發售,查詢請電內線七六零八或七六零二。 New Asia College has arranged a series of events throughout 1999 to mark its 50th anniversary. These include academic seminars, an international conference entitled 'Chinese Culture: Retrospect and Prospect', an alumni camp/conference on their community achievements, and public lectures on Chinese culture and Asian values. To commemorate the anniversary, the New Asia Fund will be set up to support the college's cultural activities on a long-term basis. To this end a fund-raising recital by world famous pianist Fou Ts'ong will take place on 8th December 1998 at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. For enquires please call 2609 7608/7602. 訃告 Obituary 本校經濟學榮休講座教授林聰標教授於一九九八年十一月十二日在台中市辭世;大學 同人深感哀悼。 林教授自一九六六年起加入中大服務,七四年任高級講師,七九年升任教授,八三年 晉升為經濟學講座教授。林教授專研亞洲經濟,並利用計量經濟學原理推測本港及亞洲經 濟發展,知名於時。林教授當年亦積極領導校內社會科學學科之發展,曾任經濟研究中心 副主任(一九七二至八二年),經濟學系系主任(一九七五至九一年),社會科學院院長(一 九七七至八零年),以及香港研究中心主任(一九八一至八三年)。 林教授於一九八五至九二年出任新亞書院院長,九五年榮休,旋赴台灣國立中正大學 出任管理學院院長兼經濟系及國際經濟研究所教授。 林教授之喪禮於上月廿二日在台中市舉行。 The University records with sadness the passing away of Prof. T.B. Lin, Emeritus Professor of Economics and former head of New Asia College, on 12th November 1998 in Taichung, Taiwan at the age of 63. Prof. L in joined the University in 1966, becoming senior lecturer in 1974, reader in 1979, and was appointed professor of economics in 1983. A n expert in Asian economies, Prof. Lin was particularly well-known for his work on econometric forecasting in Hong Kong and Asia. He was also active in providing academic leadership on campus. He served as associate director of the Economic Research Centre from 1972 to 1980, director of the Centre for Hong Kong Studies from 1981 to 1983, chairman of the Department of Economics from 1975 to 1991, and dean of social science from 1977 to 1980. Prof. Lin was head of New Asia College from 1985 to 1992. Upon retirement from the University in 1995, he joined National Chung Cheng University in Taiwan as dean of its College of Management.
