Located at the heart of CUHK’s main campus and open to the public for free, the Museum is committed to the promotion and preservation of Chinese arts and culture. Its four galleries preserve more than 15,000 art works, mainly paintings, calligraphy, rubbings and ceramics. It has published about 120 scholarly catalogues to date, while it receives more than 60,000 visitors annually. It was also the first museum in Hong Kong to collaborate with The Palace Museum in Beijing. As a university teaching museum, the Art Museum works closely with many academic departments to provide students with direct, sustained access to original Chinese works of art. With a donation of HK$50 million from the family of Mr and Mrs Harold Lee, and another generous donation from the Lo Kwee Seong Foundation, an expansion project is well underway and a new main gallery of the Art Museum, the Harold and Christina Lee Gallery, is expected to open for use in 2023. The substantial increase in gallery space will allow the Museum to curate special exhibitions in collaboration with major museums and art collectors globally to promote Chinese arts and culture. CUHK received a generous donation from the Harold and Christina Lee Family to support the expansion project of the Art Museum. The CUHK Art Museum celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021.
