Studen t enrolment ha s rise n b y almos t 50% ; th e numbe r o f undergraduat e p r o grammes ha s increase d fro m 2 3 t o 34 ; a brand ne w Facult y o f Medicin e w i t h 1 8 department s ha s bee n establishe d an d i s providing excellen t teaching an d medica l car e throug h th e facilitie s o f th e 1400-be d Princ e of Wale s Hospita l i n Shatin , which , bein g mos t recentl y built , i s amon g the bes t equippe d hospital s i n Hong Kong . Fou r Part-tim e Undergraduate Degree Programme s hav e bee n launche d t o provid e a second opportunity fo r youn g workin g adult s wh o desir e t o mak e u p fo r th e los t chance o f a university education . A t th e postgraduat e level , th e numbe r of master' s programme s ha s doubled , notabl y w i t h th e additio n o f ne w programmes i n suc h area s a s translation , compute r science , governmen t and publi c administration , statistic s an d specialize d MB A studie s — developments whic h clearl y sho w tha t th e Universit y i s eve r seekin g t o respond mor e positivel y an d effectivel y t o th e need s o f th e community . Since 1980 , a total o f 1 5 doctora l studie s programme s hav e bee n introduced in al l fiv e Faculties . A 50% growt h ha s brough t th e librar y collection to almos t on e millio n volumes . Th e expenditur e o f th e Universit y has increase d fro m jus t ove r HK$10 4 mi l l i o n i n 1978/79 t o over HK$480 millio n i n 1986/87 .
