The Internationa l Asia n Studie s Programm e (IASP ) wa s launche d in lat e 197 6 i n cooperation w i t h th e Yale-Chin a Associatio n an d ha s recently celebrate d it s tent h anniversary . Durin g thi s firs t decade , th e IASP brought t o th e Universit y almos t 50 0 student s fro m mor e tha n 2 5 countries fo r a n academi c yea r o f Asia n Studie s an d cultura l exchange . It als o provide d a uniqu e opportunit y fo r scholar s fro m differen t countries and intellectua l background s t o j o i n i n th e promotio n o f cultura l exchange. I n 1985, th e Offic e o f th e IAS P wa s reconstitute d int o th e Office o f International Studie s Programm e (OISP ) t o provide mor e effective coordinatio n fo r al l th e exchang e activitie s o f th e University . Physica l Developmen t and Donation s By 1986/87 , the tota l numbe r o f buildings o n campus alread y exceeded on e hundred . Lookin g bac k a t th e barre n landscap e o f th e sixties, we canno t hel p bu t admir e th e foresigh t o f ou r foundin g father s who chos e thi s magnificen t sit e fo r th e Universit y campus , whic h no t only command s a scenic vie w o f Tol o Harbou r bu t provide s spaciou s land fo r accommodatin g th e development s o f th e University . I n orde r t o provid e additiona l accommodatio n fo r majo r academi c departments a t a centralize d location , an d t o cop e w i t h th e expandin g academic programmes , tw o ne w academi c building s ar e bein g constructed at mid-leve l o f the campus . Th e firs t one , t o be buil t a s a n extension t o th e presen t Scienc e Centre , i s anothe r projec t w i t h majo r funding suppor t fro m Si r Ru n Ru n Shaw . I t wi ll provid e additiona l facilities fo r th e Facult y o f Scienc e a s well a s temporary housin g fo r th e new engineerin g programme s unti l purpose-buil t premise s ar e available . The secon d building , t o b e name d afte r Dr . Leun g Ka u Kui , a benefactor, is stil l i n th e plannin g stage . I t w i l b e locate d toward s th e wes t en d of th e centra l campu s an d w i l l hous e al l th e department s an d th e postgraduate division o f th e Facult y o f Busines Administration . Th e centralization of th e Facult y i n a single buildin g wil l surel y facilitat e th e implementation o f it s integrated curriculum. Anothe r academi c buildin g at centra l campu s wes t wa s name d th e Fun g Kin g He y Buildin g in January 198 6 t o commemorate th e late Mr . Fun g wh o ha d sponsored the University' s Three-yea r Maste r o f Business Administratio n Programme whe n i t was firs t se t u p te n year s ago . A n extensio n t o th e Institute o f Chines e Studie s i s unde r constructio n w i t h a donation fro m the B.Y . La m Foundatio n an d th e Be i Sha n Tan g Foundatio n whic h wi ll substantiall y increas e th e capacit y o f the A r t Galler y a s wel l a s office accommodatio n fo r th e Institute . I n fron t o f th e Universit y Library and overlookin g th e Universit y Mall , a sculpture entitle d th e ‘Gate’by Mr . J u Ming , th e internationall y fame d sculpto r fro m Taiwan , and a n imposin g Roma n foru m ar e bein g erected , whic h w i l l ad d a special aesthetic effec t t o thi s par t o f th e campus .
