The Si r Phili p Haddon-Cav e Sport s Fiel d o f th e University , whic h was name d afte r th e forme r Chie f Secretar y o f Hon g Kon g i n Januar y 1987, ha s been reprovisione d wi t h a 400-metre all-weathe r track , whic h represents a further improvemen t o n th e alread y well-endowe d sport s facilities o f th e University . Another majo r donatio n receive d durin g th e perio d wa s a twenty - million-dollar beques t from th e estat e o f th e lat e Dr . R.C . Lee , wh o wa s the Foundin g Vice-Chairma n o f th e Universit y Counci l an d Chairma n of it s Campu s Plannin g an d Buildin g Committe e unti l hi s untimel y death o n 6t h July , 1983 . Th e fund s wil l b e directe d toward s developin g engineering studies , settin g u p an endowed chai r an d promotin g research, staf f development an d campu s development . Th e Lectur e Hal l in th e Scienc e Centr e whic h i s being reprovisione d usin g a separate donation fro m hi s brother , Dr . Le e Win g Tat , wil l b e dedicate d t o Dr . Lee an d name d th e ‘Dr . R.C . Le e Lectur e Hall' . By th e earl y eighties , th e Universit y ha d already outgrow n thi s limi t an d the amenitie s an d facilitie s i n each o f the thre e College s hav e sinc e been overstretched . Furthe r expansio n o f the origina l College s migh t render the m to o larg e an d impersona l Th e establishmen t o f a new College would no t onl y provid e th e muc h neede d ne w facilities , bu t als o open u p man y ne w opportunitie s fo r improvin g th e qualit y o f educatio n offered b y th e University . T o hel p th e Universit y realiz e thi s plan , Si r Run Ru n Shaw mos t generousl y pledge d an extraordinary gif t o f HK$10 0 million fo r th e establishmen t o f the fourt h Colleg e whic h ha s bee n named Sha w Colleg e afte r him .
