Vice-Chancellor's Report The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, CUHK The Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies will be formally instituted in September 1990 to replace the Institute of Social Studies and its two research centres-the Centre for Hong Kong Studies and the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies. With its focus on multidisciplinary social science research, the institute aims to become a research and academic centre of excellence in the interrelated study of Hong Kong, China, and the Asia-Pacific region. Research topics include reform and development of China in the 1990s, gender studies, Hong Kong and the Asia-Pacific economies, Japan and Asia-Pacific development, urban and regional development in the Asia-Pacific region, the political development of Hong Kong, social indicators and the social development of Hong Kong. The Chinese University of Hong Kong Foundation Limited, a non-profit- making company affiliated with the University, was incorporated in March 1990 to launch and to ensure proper control of new research institutes/programmes which are expected to be self-financing in the long run. At the same time, greater baseline support and an incentive funds system have been introduced for the existing research units such as the Institute of Chinese Studies and the Institute of Science and Technology. n e w a c a d e m i c p r o g r a m m e s D e v e l o p e d During the period under reporting, 14 new programmes of studies were introduced or reorganized by various faculties/schools: 1987-88 Minor programme in Law M.Phil. in Anthropology 1988-89 B.Sc. in Information Engineering Minor programme in Physical Education B.Ed. in Primary Education (Part-time) M.S.Sc. in Clinical Psychology 1989-90 B.Med.Sc. (an intercalated degree programme in medical sciences) B.Sc. in Integrative Engineering instead of Information Engineering B.Sc. in Mathematics and Statistics (Part-time) B.Ed. in Physical Education (Part-time) M.A. in Chinese Language and Literature M.A. in Music (Composition) Ph.D. in English (Comparative Literature or Applied Linguistics) Ph.D. in Business Administration instead of Marketing and International Business Another 15 programmes have been approved for introduction in 1990-91: B.Sc. in Engineering instead of Integrative Engineering 9
