staff 教職員 4 5 The University has always encouraged staff members to increase their k n ow l e d ge and enhance their skills in order to cope w i t h changing job requirements or to i mp r o ve career prospects. I n 1994-95, over 2,600 staff membe rs benefited f r om six different categories of training and development programmes : • Staff development programmes and grants: A total of 17 teaching staff members and administrators received either University or external f u n d i ng i n the f o rm of scholarships, fellowships, special grants or training leave to undertake further studies, training, or research at local or overseas institutions of higher education. • Special grants for conducting research abroad i n summer : Grants amoun t i ng to HK$740,000 we re approved by the University for 29 applications f r om teachers to carry out quality research w o r k outside H o n g K o ng i n the summer of 1995. • Conference grants: Financial assistance was granted to 233 successful applicants w h o s o u g ht s u b s i d i es to a t t e nd a c a d em ic a n d p r o f e s s i o n al c o n f e r e n c es overseas. • Reimbursement of course fees for Terms of Service ( B) & (C) a nd equivalent non-teaching staff: Units and offices we re allocated budgets for staff training a nd d e v e l o pme nt to facilitate staff members to acquire job-related skills and expertise. I n the year, a total of 40 applications i n v o l v i ng fees to the tune of HK$70, 000 we re a p p r o v ed by the University for the purpose. • Internal training programmes: Nineteen n e w ly recruited Executive Assistants a nd Executive Officers attended the Executive Training Programme organized by the Personnel Office to acquire k n ow l e d ge and skills immediately needed f or e f f e c t i ve e x e c u t i on of their duties. A n e w l y d e s i g n ed Staff I n d u c t i on Programme for clerical and secretarial staff was introduced to enable these n ew staff membe rs to understand better the University, the job expectations, and their terms a nd benefits. At the same t i me mo re t han 1,900 staff memb e rs attended training courses r un by the Computer Services Centre to enhance their c ompu t er skills and k n ow l e d ge in computer applications. • Concessional rates for attending the School of Continuing Studies (SCS ): A total of 379 staff members enjoyed concessional rates (ranging f r om 50 per cent to 80 per cent of course fees) for attending different kinds of continuing education courses r un b y the SCS. The half-fee concessional arrangement for attending general courses has been extended to staff members w h o have officially retired f r om the University.
