工商管理學院、工程學院及社會科學院將由一九九六至九七年度起,為新生增設按個別 學院需要而設計之英文必修科目,促使學生注意語文的重要性,並協助他們掌握語文的實用 技巧。類似的語文課程亦將於其他學院推行。 The University constantly ensures that all its staff members are sensitized to its primary function o f providing quality education to students. In the course of 1995-96 the University continued to review its system s regularly w i t h a v i ew to further imp r ov i ng their effectiveness under changing circumstances. A Teaching and Learning Quality Process Review (TLQPR) was conducted for the University by th e University Grants Committee of Hong Kong in January 1996, which provided a n impetus for the University i n regard to both teaching and learning. The recommendations of the TLQPR Panel were carefully examined and, where appropriate, followed up on by the University. I n the light of the rapidly changing socio-economic and political condition s of the local communit y as we ll as the declining standards in both Chines e and English amon g students, extra attention was given to the University' s bilingual education i n 1995-96. The University has been actively addressing this difficult task, given the constraints o f l imi t ed resources on the one hand and l imi t ed students' time on the other. Apart f r om e x pand i ng the p r o v i s i o n of elective language courses and mu l t i - f acet language enhancement activities organized by the Independent Learning Centre , a w i de range of outside-classroom language enhancement activities were held by the University's constituent colleges to help students improve thei r language ability . Three English proficiency courses wer e offered i n the summer of 1996 t o provide an additional English-learning oppo r t un i ty for students who felt the need for language improvement but could not enro l into such courses du r i ng regular terms owing to heavy coursework or timetable clashes. The provision of language enhancement programmes was also extended to postgraduate students i n 1995-96 w i t h the inclusion of t wo short language sessions in the induction programme for newly-admitted postgraduate research students. W i t h a v i ew to p r omo t i ng greater awarenes s among students of the need to be proficient in both Chinese and English and to acquire a wo r k i n g knowledge of both, the faculties of business administration, engineering, an d social science w i l l introduce English for Specific Purposes courses as required courses for their first-year students starting f r om 1996-97. This w i l l be on a pilo t basis. The University also plans to introduce in the near future language enhancement programmes i n other faculties to cater to the specific needs of their students.
