the University initiated th e following inter-institutional collaborative projects in 1996-97; • th e CUHK Beijing Liaison Office a t Peking University t o enhance mutual links an d co - operation; • th e Joint Laboratory fo r Geoinformation Science with th e Chinese Academy o f Sciences; • th e CUHK China Career Development Award Programme, co-organized with Peking University, Tsinghua University, an d Beijing Administrative College to familiarize students with contemporary China an d prepare them fo r China-related careers; an d • th e Medical Education Association fo r China Mainland, Taiwanand th e Hong Kong Region, formed b y th e University's Medical Faculty, Beijing Medical University, an d Taiwan Yang Ming University. In addition, th e exchange programme (phase II) with Taiwan University wa s no w in it s second year and the scope o f activities wa s broadened t o include cooperative projects. The University also continued t o expand its links an d cooperative efforts in teaching an d research with other centres of excellence abroad. Through exchange programmes, bilateral an d consortial agreements, an d research cooperation, students an d faculty benefited from visits t o partner institutions th e world over an d return-visitsfrom their counterparts t o Th e Chinese University. During th e year, th e Universityreviewed an d extended important relationships with Ne w York University, th e University o f Toronto, the University o f Western Ontario, th e University o f California at Lo s Angeles, an d th e Ecole Francaise d'Extreme-Orient (EFEO). In th e area o f student exchange, th e University currently conductsover 3 5 bilateral o r consortial exchange programmes with overseas partners. In 1996-97, some 110 incoming exchange students from different parts o f the world attended the University's academic programmes. Over 100 outgoing CUHK exchange students benefite d from semester o r year-long periods o f study in Japan, Korea, Canada and th e United States. In the coming year, exchange activities will commence with Australia. Many other students participated i n short-term language enhancement an d culture-learning experiences in different countries, especially in th e summer months.
