Preparations for the third edition of The Hong Kong Securities Industry (previously known as th e Manual of Hong Kong Securities Markets) were also finalized for publication jointly with the Stock Exchange o f Hong Kong i n September 1997. Many inudstrial support projects of great relevance to local industry were initiated by University researchers under the sponsorship of the Industry Department. These included the development of manufacturing protocols for producing standardized quality mushroom nutriceuticals from ganoderma lucidum, chemical quality control i n support of the export o f proprietary Chinese medicines, a novel diagnostic kit for the early detection of human cervical cancer, the development of a large vocabulary/speech database of Cantonese, and the establishment of a Hong Kong bioinformatics centre. The University's Computer Services Centre has for many years provided excellent service t o Internet users, particularly after the establishment of the Hong Kong Internet Exchange. The Computer Services Centre, jointly with Radio Television Hong Kong, launched a historic 48-hour live Internet broadcast of the handover ceremony in Hong Kong and subsequent celebrations between 30th June and 2nd July 1997. Last but not least, a total of 4,585 students graduated from the University in 1996-97.
