校長報告 Vice-Chancellor's Review 一九九八至九九年是頗為艱辛的一年。對香港來説,這是經濟 衰退和失業率高企的一年;對眾多接受大學敎育資助委員會 (敎資會)資助的大學來説,這是經費遭削減的首年,而整個三 年撥款期內(一九九八至二零零一年)政府資助額將減少共百 分之十。 年初校方已知即將面對嚴峻的財務考驗,亦決意要在預算遭削 減的情況下,繼續在敎學、硏究和服務各方面維持卓越成績。 為了進一步節約經費並提高成本效益,我們不斷檢討現有架 構,重組工作流程;我們又致力維持高素質的敎學和研究,繼 續開拓國際聯繫。繼一九九八年五月大學管理層召開「策略性 規劃工作坊」之後,校內各單位於年中陸續舉行類似活動, 反思各自的使命、目標和策略性路向,以協助大學制訂整體發 展計劃,找出既有強項以集中資源發展,並建立具體的方案 以實現特定目標。 The year 1998-99 has not been an easy year. For Hong Kong, it has been a year of economic recession and high unemployment. For universities funded by the University Grants Committee (UGC), 1998-99 was the first year of the triennium to be affected by a 10 per cent cut in resource allocation. The year for The Chinese University began with full awareness of the fiscal hardship that looms ahead, and a determination to continue to excel in teaching, research, and service despite budget cuts. Much effort has been spent on continuous reviewing, reorganization, and re-engineering to mak e even greater economies and achieve greater 我們的使命 Our Mission 在各個學科領域,全面綜合地進行教學與研究,提供公共服務,致力 保存、創造、應用及傳播知識,以滿足香港、全中國、以至世界各 地人民的需要,並為人類的福祉作出獻。 To assist in the preservation,creation,applicationanddissemination of knowledge byteaching,researchandpublicserviceinacomprehensive range of disciplines,therebyservingtheneedsandenhancing the well-being of the citizens of, in order of priority, Hong Kong, China as a whole, and the wider world community.
