together with the launch of the Hong Kong Literature Collection. The second International Conference of Institutes and Libraries for Chinese Overseas Studies was held jointly with Ohio University from 13th to 15th March 2003 in celebration of the University's 40th anniversary. During 2002-3 library holdings were substantially reinforced by the wonderful donation of more than 7,000 volumes on Hong Kong literature and 10,000 volumes on Chinese literature by Prof. Lo Wai Luen, and the acquisition of 9,956 new serial titles, including 3,094 print journals, 6,531 electronic journals, 65 databases, 56 newspapers, and 84 electronic newspapers. The University continued to place greater emphasis on special collections, and a total of HK$1.16 million was spent on purchasing materials related to Hong Kong literature, Hong Kong studies, multimedia resources, Chinese overseas studies, and career resources. Substantial savings were gained through collaborative purchase. The University subscribed to 28 major databases and electronic journal aggregators through collaborative purchase with other local libraries via the JULAC Collaborative Development Committee. A Hong Kong Medical Consortium was also formed in September 2002 with the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on Ovid's databases and e-books. New Initiatives In response to the needs of student users, the loan policy for audiovisual materials was relaxed during the year to allow students to check out such materials for use on campus. To improve the circulation of heavily requested books, those books with more than five holds were changed to five-day short loan, and those with more than 10 holds were changed to three-day short loan. 敎學輔助設施 Academic Support Facilities 89
