香港語言學學會周年研討會 The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong Annual Research Forum 第一屆中國大學莎士比亞戲劇比賽 The First Chinese Universities Shakespeare Festival • Organized by the Departmen t of Fine Arts and the Art Museum, an exhibition entitled 'Noble Riders from Pines and Deserts: The Artistic Legacy of the Qidan' was held. Unprecedented in a local tertiary institution, the project was meant to provide research trainingand curatorial experience for Fine Arts postgraduates , and to fully exploit the joint benefits of research and teaching facilities of both the department and the museum. Students took part in the entire process of preparation and research for the exhibition and the writing of the accompanying exhibition catalogue. • W i th the support of the Edwin S.L. Cheng Research Fund for General Education and Philosophy , the Department of Philosophy set up the Research Centre for ChinesPhilosophy and Culture and the Archive for Phenomenolog y and Contemporar y Philosophy . In conjunction with its inauguration , the centre hosted an internationa l conference on 'Western Interpretations , ChinesResponses : Reflections and Inquiries on the Methodology of Chines Philosophy' . • T he Departmen t of Cultural and Religious Studies set up the Centre for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism in collaboration with the Fo Guang S h an F o u n d a t i on f or B u d d h i st C u l t u re a n d Education. The centre will promote he a c a d e m ic study of B u d d h i s m, enhance internationa l exchange a nd t r a i n i ng of B u d d h i st s c h o l a r s, a n d p r o m u l g a t e Buddhist culture. • The Department of Music received a donation of HK$3.76 million from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for the operation of its Chinese Music Archive and departmenta l research. The Chines Music Archive will implement a series of plans in the areas of preservation , audiovisual digitalization , general education, as well as research and publication. • Several major academic events and conferences were organized or co- organized by department s and units of the Faculty: - T he First Chiu Chin Yin Fund Visiting Scholar (March to April 2005, Department of ChinesLanguage and Literature) , with Prof. Ting Pang-Hsin as the speaker of four public lectures - An internationa l conference on 'Translation Software — The State of the Art' to celebrate he 10th anniversary of the BA in Translation programme and the 20th anniversary of the MA in Translation programme (December 2004, Department of Translation) - An internationa l c o n f e r e n ce on ‘A C o n t e s t ed Topography : Inauguration Seminar for the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies' to celebrate he establishmen t of the Department of Cultural and Religious Studies (October 2004, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies) - The Linguistic Society of Hong Kong Annual Research Forum 2004 on ‘Language Change and Language Standardization ' (December 2004, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages ) - T he First ChinesUniversities Shakespear Festival (January 2005, Department of English and the Office of the Arts Administrator ) - An academic conference on ‘The Rise of a Productive Market Economy in Late Qing a nd Republican China' (March 2005, Department of History and Hoover Institution f Stanford University) - An internationa l w o r k s h op on ' C o n s t r u c t i o n s of M u s e u m: Challenges of Museology in Asia' (April 2005, Department of Fine Arts and É cole Fran ç aise d'Extr ê me Orient, Paris) - Conferenc on 'Contextualizing Cultural Theories and Practices ' (May 2005, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies) - ‘Modern ChinesLiterature Lecture Series' (February to April 2005, Department of ChinesLanguage and Literature) 佛光山文敎基金會董事長星雲 大師與劉遵義校長出席人間 佛敎研究中心的開幕典禮 The Venerable Master Hsing Yun, director of Fo Guang Shan Foundation for Buddhist Culture and Education, and Prof. Lawrence J.
