Alumni The graduation of the 2005 class brought the total number of the University's a l umni to over 90,000. Achievements and services to Ho ng Kong by our a l umni have been given widespread recognition. Some were included i n the Ho ng Kong SAR Government's 2005 Honours List. Two were honoured by the award of the Gold Bauhinia Star — Mr. Ma Lik, chairman of Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Ho ng Kong; and Mr. Vincent Cheng H o i Chuen, chairman of HSBC. (See table for C U HK A l u m n i on the 2005 HKSAR Honours List on pages 82-83.) Four alumni were elected as members of the Legislative Council i n the 2004 election — Mr. Ma Lik, Mr. Cheung Ma n Kwong, Mr. Kwo ng Chi Kin, and Mr. Sin Chung Kai. I n recognition of their outstanding c on t r i bu t i on to the Un i v e r s i ty and the c ommun i t y, the University awarded Honorary Fellowships to four distinguished alumni i n May 2005. They are Dr. Thomas Cheung Hu en Cheong, Mr. Lee K am Chung, Dr. Charles Wang Cheung Tze, and Ms. Lina Yan Hau Yee. As in the past, many alumni contributed their professional expertise for the development of their alma mater through the University Council, the College Boards of Trustees, and various advisory committees, or by giving talks to staff and students. Some alumni i n the legal profession rendered support to the planning of the new Law School. College mentorship programmes and teaching departments were also enriched by alumni who shared their experiences and w i s dom w i th fellow students. The alumni community continued to make donations to support the developments of the University, the colleges and the teaching departments. The 'Caring A l umni Donation Scheme' launched by the University met w i t h favourable response f r om alumni. Many also supported the expansion of the Un i v e r s i t y 's s t udent exchange p r o g r ammes and overseas a l umni associations offered local hospitality to visiting exchange students f r om CUHK. The University organized a Homecoming for alumni who have graduated for a number of years that are multiples of 5. Some 1,000 alumni came back to visit new facilities, view demonstration of research projects, and return to classrooms for lectures. The A l umni Affairs Office published a book entitled ‘回首四十年——原來……我們是這樣成長 的’ i n February 2005 wh i ch recorded the collective memories of close to 100 C U HK alumni of different eras of their CU student days and campus life. A global CUHK alumni network formed by 80 international alumni associations fosters linkage between the University and its alumni. Legislation for formally adding ‘ 校友’ (alumni) i n the Chinese name of the C U HK Convocation was completed i n July 2005. The Chinese name of the Convocation is now '香港中文大學校友評議會 ' . I n the 12 years since its establishment, the CUHK Convocation has published over 20 op i n i on papers and reports to reflect the views of C U HK a l umni on issues relating to social, educational or un i v e r s i ty affairs. The convocation also organizes fundraising campaigns annually, culminating i n over HK$10 m i l l i on accumulative donations for University units and charitable causes. I n 2004, the convocation granted the first ' C U H K C o n v o c a t i on O u t s t a n d i ng Services a nd C r e a t i v i ty S t u d e nt Aw a r d s' to three undergraduates. The total number of awards each year was increased to four f r om 2005. The Education Foundation of the Federation of CUHK A l umni Associations continued to contribute to local education. Together w i t h the new kindergarten that opened i n September 2004, the foundation now operates t wo kindergartens, one primary school and t wo secondary schools i n Hong Kong. Meantime, the foundation continued to raise funds to support poverty-stricken areas i n China. Apart f r om soliciting alumni donations to sponsor books and tuition fees for individual school children, it established six more a l umni p r i ma ry schools i n China, b r i ng i ng the total number of the foundation's schools i n mainland China to 28. 學生和校友 Students and Alumni 8 1
