In collaboration with the food industry, the Faculty of Engineering developed a RFID-enabled Platform Technology for the Integrated Shenzhen–Hong Kong Food Safety and Supply Chain Management Public Information Platform. The system ensures that food and beverage delivered to Hong Kong are safe, traceable and are kept in proper conditions throughout the entire process of transportation and storage after manufacturing. The Food Research Centre is the first university-based food research centre in Hong Kong. It undertakes a systematic and problem-solving approach to serving the community by providing task-directed basic research and service for local food businesses and industry. It also set up the first Food Composition Database in Hong Kong in July 2007. Apart from analysing food ingredients and products commonly used in Hong Kong, the database also provides detailed food composition reference data and technical support for the local food industry, thereby facilitating its compliance with the upcoming nutrition labeling scheme. The recent regulatory approval of plasmid DNA vaccines for livestock and its use in human clinical trials have created a demand for plasmid DNA. In February 2008, the Hong Kong Institute of Biotechnology secured funding to conduct a two-year collaborative research project with GreenPak Biotech Ltd to optimize the manufacturing process for large- scale fermentation and purification of plasmid DNA. Building on the teaching and research excellence of the Faculty of Business Administration, the APIB supports the business community in the form of executive training, research and consultancy services. In 2007–08, APIB organized a series of executive programmes, seminars and workshops for the HKSAR Government and major corporations such as Credit Suisse, HSBC, China Development Bank, and MTRC. Some programmes are customized to provide business solutions unique to corporations.
