Annual Report 2008–09

Computer and Information Technology Infrastructure Efforts to advance the University’s IT infrastructure continued. Almost all lecture theatres, classrooms and most student canteens were Wi-Fi enabled with the new centrally- managed Wi-Fi Model, which gives users better coverage, more consistent interface and easier access than before. A new Wi-Fi service for guests was also introduced for alumni, short-term guests and visitors coming to CUHK for conferences and visits. The Central Computer Room located at Pi Chiu Building plays an important role in maintaining smooth operation of the University’s information systems. To support the ever-increasing number of servers and equipment, the total capacity of the Uninterrupted Power Supply was upgraded from 500kVA to 700kVA in April 2009. This ensures the availability of the critical IT and network services during power outages. A CU Link card upgrade exercise was carried out in the year under review. The new card adopts contactless technology, giving University members a range of benefits including the convenience of tap-to-pass- through campus facilities, greater durability and notably reduced transaction times. Support for Research, Teaching and Learning An encouraging 9.3% growth was recorded in the total number of courses hosted at the three eLearning platforms WebCT, Moodle and CUForum, reaching 3,372. Being an increasingly important supplement to traditional teaching and learning, system upgrades were performed on all the three eLearning platforms to bring new functions and enhanced experience to users. The eLearning support services were further strengthened with the recruitment of a team of eLearning assistants to assist teachers in planning, developing teaching materials and setting up course websites on eLearning platforms. Promotion of eLearning technologies and skills was also done through the eLS@CU Newsletter , eLearning EXPO and a series of seminars and workshops. Development of CUSIS To prepare for the new requirements of the 3+3+4 education reform, the University embarked on a project to develop an integrated student-oriented information system named CUSIS (Chinese University Student Information System). The system, to be built on Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise Campus Solutions, an ERP- based student administration management system, will enable CUHK to efficiently manage student-related data throughout their years of study and after their graduation. Information Security Awareness As information security became a pressing concern in society, a series of seminars were conducted for staff and students. User awareness was also enhanced through educational leaflets and online promotion.
