4 We also recruited 302 non-local undergraduates, who hailed from 25 provinces and municipalities in mainland China as well as other countries and regions, including Austria, Germany, Indonesia, Macau, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Portugal, South Korea, the US and Zimbabwe. Of the 254 mainland students recruited through the National Unified Universities and Colleges Entrance Examination System, 16 were top scorers in their respective provinces, municipalities or regions. We take pride in the superlative quality of the 2008 cohort and its rich and dynamic cultural mix. Academic Developments CUHK continued to introduce new programmes of studies in response to changing social needs. They included two undergraduate minor programmes, one in Hotel and Tourism Management and the other in Japanese Culture and Language. There were two new co-terminal double-degree programmes, one leading to a BA in Chinese Language and Literature and BEd in Chinese Language Education, and the other to a BA in English Studies and BEd in English Language Education. Two double-degree options were offered: LLB–BSSc (Sociology) and BSSc (Sociology)–JD. A total of nine new postgraduate programmes in subjects ranging from Cardiology to Chinese Linguistics and Language Acquisition were also introduced. The School of Biomedical Sciences was established on 1 June 2009 to take over the research and teaching programmes previously offered by the Departments of Anatomy, Biochemistry (Medicine), Pharmacology and Physiology. The Department of Architecture was renamed the School of Architecture on 1 August 2009. The School of Public Health and the Department of Community and Family Medicine merged to become the School of Public Health and Primary Care on the same day. Governance Reform and Senior Appointments Following the approval by the University Council of plans to reorganize the Senate, an Ad Hoc Committee on the Reorganization of the Council was established in early 2009 to make recommendations on the restructuring of the Council. The Committee met five times and held four consultation sessions with Senate members, College fellows, students, alumni and employees to seek their views before submitting a final report, which was subsequently endorsed by the Task Force on University Governance and in turn approved by the Council. Steps are being taken to implement the Committee’s recommendations, which include reducing the size of the Council from 58 to 25 members for the purpose of streamlining its 學務發展 與時並進 是年,我們繼續與時俱進,推出新課程, 以應社會發展需要。新開設的課程包括兩 項本科副修課程(酒店及旅遊管理學、日 本文化及日語)、兩項同期結業雙學位課 程(文學士〔中國語言及文學〕及教育學 士〔中國語文教育〕、文學士〔英國語文研 究〕及教育學士〔英國語文教育〕)、兩項 雙學位模式選擇課程(法學士—社會科 學學士〔社會學〕、社會科學學士〔社會 學〕—法律博士),以及九項研究院課程, 涵蓋心臟科至漢語語言學及語言獲得等 科目。 在重組解剖學、生物化學(醫學院)、藥理 學和生理學四個學系的教研資源與課程 後,我們於二零零九年六月一日成立生物 醫學學院。同年八月一日,再成立建築學 院和公共衞生及基層醫療學院,分別取代 原有的建築學系,以及公共衞生學院與社 區及家庭醫學系。 改革管治 委任要員 大學校董會通過重組教務會後,復於二零 零九年初成立專責委員會,研議大學校董 會重組事宜。委員會召開了五次會議,並 四度舉辦諮詢會,廣泛徵詢教務會成員、 書院院務委員、員生及校友的意見。專責 委員會經深入討論並考慮各方意見後,向 大學管治專責小組呈交報告,報告其後分 別獲專責小組和大學校董會通過。我們將 採取措施,執行專責委員會的建議,包括 把校董會成員人數由五十八人減至二十五 人,以精簡架構,提升效率。校董會也將首 度增加四名由教務人員、非教務人員、本 科生、研究生互選產生的校董。大學管治 架構得以改革,既承專責委員會和專責小 組成員殫精竭慮,藎籌碩劃,復賴員生校 友積極參與諮詢,多所獻替。爰書片語, 用申謝忱。
