Annual Report 2013–14

人類學系譚少薇教授得到知識轉移項 目基金資助,開展「Multiculturalism in Action: Promoting Indian Culture as Local Heritage」計劃。 On the technology transfer front, the University granted 61 licences to licensees in the year under review. And 166 patents were filed across the globe, with 136 granted. Remarkable licensing income was harvested this year from commercialization activities, with a total amount of income generated from intellectual property rights at HK$42.5 million. With support from the KPF, Prof. Tam Siu- mi Maria, a cultural anthropologist from the Department of Anthropology, developed the project ‘Multiculturalism in Action: Promoting Indian Culture as Local Heritage’, which drew on her earlier research on the South Asian community in Hong Kong. It pioneered a new model of cross-cultural knowledge education using a two-tier approach. The first tier involved community engagement and training of cultural trainers (university students). In the second tier, the trainers conducted interactive presentations in local secondary schools, and developed an information kit for cross- cultural learning. By involving Indians as speakers and collaborators, Professor Tam encouraged mutual understanding between Chinese and Indians. Also with the support from the KPF, Prof. Jong Siu-yung Morris of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and his research team in the Centre for the Advancement of Information Technology in the Faculty of Education have developed an online learning platform called ‘LearningVillages’ to make learning enjoyable for students. LearningVillages is a role-playing game for multiple participants, in which each village represents an issue of enquiry. Students are represented by their own avatars, and participate collaboratively in enquiry learning. So far, students from 18 Hong Kong secondary schools took part in a LearningVillages tournament to pursue collaborative issue enquiry concerning topics in the three learning areas of liberal studies, namely, self and personal development; society and culture; and science, technology and the environment. 37
