John Dewey, the w id ow o f the Am erican Philosopher, visited C hung C h i College on N ovem ber 5 and gave a lecture in the Science Le ctu re H a ll on the subject "J o h n Dewey, the Philosopher and the m an" . She was in trodu ced to the audience by D r. C h iu - sam Tsang, Dean o f the F aculty o f A rts , who is one o f the Hong K o n g members o f the John Dewey Society. M rs . Dewey described the Philosopher as a man o f many facets who was practical in his ph ilosophy and also said tha t her husband had been one o f the leaders in ‘‘progressive educa tion ". D r . Ma rga re t L . Cormack. D r. M argaret L . Cormack o f the East W est Centre, U n iv e rs ity o f Haw aii, visited N ew Asia College on N ovem ber 5. She toured the College w ith M r. B. P. Schoyer, A c tin g President. D r. Edwa rd W . Weidner. D r. Edw ard W . W eidner, V ice-P resident o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H aw aii and M rs . M , S. Ravenholt visited N ew Asia College on N ovem ber 20 and were in v ite d to lunch by M r . B . P. Schoyer. Senior members o f the teaching staff had thus the o p p o rtu n ity to discuss w ith them and exchange views on education in the East and the West. D r . Reimot Jachimson. D r. Reim ot Jachimson o f K ie l U n iv e rs ity , Germany, delivered a lecture on O ctober 7 in N ew Asia College at the in v ita tio n o f the D e pa rtm ent o f Business A d m in is tra tio n . T h e top ic o f his lecture was " T h e F inancial Revival o f Post-war G erm an y” . COLLEGE REPORTS Vi l lage Research T h e D e pa rtm ent o f Sociology and Social W o rk has been carrying out a research project in T a ip o T au V illage w h ich is situated near the College. T h is pro je ct is a scheme worked ou t between D r. C. K . Yang o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H aw a ii and M r. S. L . W ong, Chairman o f the Departm ent. W h ile M r. W ong is in charge o f the project, D r. Yang has agreed to serve as adviser. Since the beginning o f th is semester a study centre has been established in the village. A b o u t 30 students, divide d in to five groups, are taking active pa rt in the project. T h e project is supported by the Asia Foundation. Electronics Tra i ner a t Un i t ed College T h e P h ilip s Company has presented the U n ite d College w ith an electronics tra in e r machine o f the value o f over $60,000 to prom ote in s tru c tio n in E le ct­ ronics. T h e electronics tra in e r machine is used as visual aid fo r E lectronics teaching and obviate all necessity fo r blackboard dem onstration. T h e U n ite d College had made a survey o f the needs o f electronic engineers in H o ng K c n g tw o years ago and has since been developing E lectronics Courses at the College w ith the hope o f establishing in the near fu tu re a D e pa rtm ent o f E lectronics. H o Chung-chung , M .B .E ., B .A ., M .A ., L .H .D ., J.P ., have been elected to the Board o f Trustees of U n ite d College, the Chinese U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng Kong. M r. H o T im is the General Manager o f Hang Seng Bank and a w e ll-k n ow n financier and ph ila n th ro p is t in H ong K on g . D r. Chung Sze-yuen is a distinguished engineer and the M anaging D ire c to r o f the Sonca Ind u strie s L im ite d ;he is a C oun cil M em b e r o f the Federation o f H o n g K o n g Ind u strie s and the H ong K o n g Managem ent Association and has recently been appointed a Justice o f the Peace by H is Excellency the G overnor. D r. H o C hung-chung is the P rin cipa l and Supervisor o f T ru e L ig h t M id d le School o f H ong K o n g and a leading educationist in H ong K on g . U n ite d College w ill benefit m uch from the experience and advice o f these em inent citizens. M r. Johnson Chow , p a rt-tim e lecturer o f the D e p a rt m ent o f F ine A rts, N ew Asia College, and M rs . Chow held a jo in t e x h ib itio n o f Chinese paintings from N ovem ber 1 to 4 at the C ity H a ll. M r. & M rs . Chien M u opened the e x h ib itio n w h ich was attended by a large num be r o f art lovers. T o stim ulate popu lar interest in the sport o f bad m in to n , N ew Asia College held the F irs t Inter-C o llegiate M a tc h from N ovem ber 17 to 19 in the College bad m in to n court. U n ite d College carried away the tro p h y -U n iv e rs ity Cup-presented by M r. H . T . W u, Registrar o f the Chinese U n iv e rs ity . A ll prizes were donated by the Y a le -in -C h in a Association. On N ovem ber 20 , the governors o f N ew Asia College held a m eeting w h ic h was presided over by M r. B. P. Schoyer. A fte r paying th e ir respects to th e ir late chairman, D r. V e rm e ir Y . C h iu, the Board reached the fo llow in g decisions: 1. M r. John T u n g was elected P rovisional Chairman o f the Board and w o u ld act in this capacity till reorganisation o f the Board. 2. M r. L iu H a n-tan g w ould represent the Board in U n iv e rs ity Council. 6
