Before com ing to H o ng K on g , he had taught in N a tion a l Sun Yat-Sen U n i versity as a lecturer and in the Kw a ng tu ng Province A rts and Science College as Associate Professor and later Professor in H isto ry. Before jo in in g Chung C h i College, he was Professor o f H is to ry in C hu H a i College and a le ctu rer in the H o ng K o n g Evening In s titu te . Engene E-Hsi en Yeh, Chung Chi College, English Literature. M r . Yeh received his early education in Banka, ! now a pa rt o f Indonesia. He completed his Chinese m id d le school education in Singapore and also passed the Senior Cam bridge (Overseas) exam ination fo r adm ission to the U n iv e rs ity o f Cambridge. H e took up N o rm a l T ra in in g under the Education Depa rtm ent in Singapore and in 1920 began his E nglish teaching career. In 1922, having been awarded a scholarship in the U .S .A ., he entered De Pauw U n iv e rs ity and graduated w ith a B .A . (H onours) degree in June, 1924; in 1925 he obtained the M .A . degree in P hilosophy and Educa tion . In 1925-1927 Δ he enrolled in the G raduate School o f N o rth -W e ste rn U n iv e rs ity and G a rre tt Theo logica l Sem inary where he received the B .D . degree. A t N o rthw e ste rn U n iv e rs ity M r. Yeh served as Teaching Assistant in the D e pa rtm ent o f H is to ry and lite ra tu re o f Religions (College o f A rts). F rom 1927 to 1929, he was a D iv in ity F ellow in the U n iv e rs ity o f Chicago G raduate D iv in ity School, and studied also in the G raduate School o f the U n ive rs ity. In 1930 M r . Yeh returned to Singapore and served as D ire c to r o f Y ou ng People's W o rk and Secretary o f Religious E ducation under the Am erican M e th o d ist M ission (fo r Malaya and Sumatra), and a year later as P rin c ip a l o f the M e th o d is t Secondary C ontinuation School in K ua la L u m p u r. He returned to China in 1936 Δ and stayed b rie fly in N anking, then went to C h un gkin g and Chengtu, Szechuan, d u rin g the Sino- Japanese W a r (1937-1945), and held various ap po in t­ ments in the N a tion a l Governm ent. In 1939-1941, he was appointed by the M in is try o f Education as Professor and C hairm an o f the Departm ent o f Foreign Languages and L ite ra tu re o f the new ly amalgamated N a tion a l N o rthw e ste rn U n iv e rs ity at Chengku, Shensi. In 1941 he returned to Chengtu and taught at the U n iv e rs ity o f N a n kin g and N a tion a l Szechuan U n i versity Ι in 1942 he served as Head o f the D epa rtm ent o f E nglish, U n iv e rs ity o f N anking, and con cu rre n tly as D ire c to r o f the Special E ng lish Classes under the auspices o f the F ive C h ristian U n iversities at Hw a- si-pa, Chengtu, fo r the tra in in g o f E ng lish secretaries and in te rpre te rs fo r war service, a programme sponsored by the M in is try o f Education. In 1946 M r. Yeh returned to N a n kin g w ith the U n iv e rs ity and served as D e p u ty -C h ie f o f the D epa rtm ent o f Foreign A ffairs in the A rm y Headquarters under the M in is try o f N a tion a l Defence. In 1947 he served in the M in is try o f Education as D ire c to r o f the T ra in in g In s titu te fo r Teachers o f E nglish in M id d le schools in China. H a ving served in th is capacity fo r almost a year, M r. Yeh received a T ra ve l-F e llow sh ip from the U n ite d Board fo r C h ristian Colleges and U n iversities in China and proceeded to the U n ite d States fo r study in L in g u i­ stics and T each in g M ethods in E nglish and other European languages. M r. Yeh taught in N an kin g U n iv e rs ity fo r three years after his re tu rn from abroad in 1950. In July, 1959, M r . L i was representing the Chinese U n iv e rs ity at the Association's conference fo r the firs t tim e since the inauguration o f the U n ive rsity. D r. L i returned on December 15. 5
