T h e V ice-C hancellor, D r. C h o h -M in g L i, who is con curre ntly the D ire c to r o f the In s titu te o f Social Studies and the H um anities, made the announcement to a jo in t meeting o f the tw o advisory comm ittees. D r. C .T . Y un g is con currently the D ire c to r o f the In s titu te o f Science and Technology. T h e in itia l organization o f the two In stitu te s is as fo llow s :- O n Functions A U n iv e rs ity In s titu te perform s two fu n ction s: to prom ote and encourage fa cu lty research and to conduct postgraduate train in g. T h e facu lty research at the In s titu te does not replace the k in d o f research supported by the regular College budget fo r teaching purposes. T h e In s titu te is also intended to be an im p o rtan t vehicle fo r cooperation — in research and teaching — w ith universities abroad. O n Subject Fields T h e In s titu te o f Social Studies and the H um an ities w ill promote at the present stage the fo llow in g subject fields: Econom ics, Business A dm in is tra tio n (in c lu d in g Commerce, Finance and Accounting), P ub lic A dm in is tra tio n , Geography, Mass Comm unication, M od e rn Chinese Social Studies, C ontem porary Chinese Social Studies, Social Survey and Research, Sociology, Social Welfare, W o rld H isto ry, M od e rn Languages. T h e In s titu te o f Science and T echnology w ill, fo r the tim e being, embrace the fo llow in g subject fields in b o th the pure and applied aspects: Biology, C hem istry, M athem atics and Statistics, Physics. On Stages o f Development Generally, the develop­ m ent o f an In s titu te w ill go through the fo llow ing stages: (a) In d iv id u a l facu lty research, fo r w h ich in d iv id u a l fa cu lty members who are interested in doing research w ill be encouraged to su bm it to the D ire c to r outlines o f projects. Projects, how ­ ever, must not be proposed fo r the sake o f proposing; they should centre around w o rk or ideas that have been underway o r under con- BULLETIN
